WHAT IS CLOUD COMPUTING ?
Cloud Definitions
• Definition from NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology)
▪ Cloud computing is a model for enabling convenient, on-demand
network access to a shared pool of configurable computing
resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and
services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with
minimal management effort or service provider interaction.
An example would help
• You are working on a complex problem and need
computational power
• In the old world, you had three options
Option 1 – Buy yourself
• You called up one of the big server manufacturers
(HP, IBM, Dell, etc.) and ordered a server.
• Then, you could either install it in your own data
center or in colocation space that you had rented
from somebody like Switch or Equinix.
• The responsibility was yours for acquisition,
installation, and maintenance.
Option 2- Lease a server
• You called up a leasing company and told them you
wanted to lease some equipment.
• You selected from among their stock and they
delivered it to your door.
• You had the responsibility of installing and
configuring it in your data center or colo facility.
Option 3 – Rent a server
• You could rent a server from a managed service
provider (Savvis, Rackspace, Terremark, etc.).
• The MSP would allocate you a server from their own
internal stock, deploy it for you in their data center,
and then turn over the keys for you to operate it.
In the world of cloud computing
• You signup for a service from a cloud provider, for
instance AWS EC2
• Your cloud instance is accessible over network, is
highly scaleable, you can request resources on
demand and pay-as-you-go.
• In simple words, cloud computing is a refinement of
the rental model, with shorter timescales for
resource rental.
• You need to travel from Islamabad to Karachi
• What would you choose and would you buy or rent?
