MIDTERM EXAMINATION
INTCOMP – INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTING
First Semester AY 2024-2025
Practical Examination: INTCOMP
Duration: 3 hours
Total Points: 100
TOPICS COVERED:
Module 3 – Key Components of Computer Systems
Module 4 – Computer Security and Malware
Module 5 – Internet and Internet Protocols
Laboratory Module – MS EXCEL
Problem 1: Identifying and Describing Key Components of a Computer System
Objective:
To demonstrate an understanding of the essential hardware components of a computer system
and describe their functions.
Instructions:
1. Open a word processor or presentation software.
2. Create a labeled diagram of a typical desktop computer system, including the following
components:
o Central Processing Unit (CPU)
o Memory (RAM)
o Storage (Hard Drive or SSD)
o Power Supply Unit (PSU)
o Input/Output devices (e.g., Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse)
3. Below the diagram, provide a brief description (2-3 sentences) of each component, explaining its
function.
4. Use different colors to highlight each component for better visual understanding.
5. Save your document or presentation as "Midterm_YourName.docx" and submit it.
Sample Output:
A diagram with clear labels and color-coded components.
Descriptions of each component like:
CPU: The brain of the computer responsible for executing instructions and processing data.
Rubric (25 points):
Criteria Points Description
Diagram Includes all required components: CPU, RAM, Storage, PSU, I/O devices,

This format balances conceptual understanding with practical diagram creation.
Problem 2: Identifying and Preventing Malware Threats
Objective:
To recognize different types of malware and suggest preventive measures to protect a computer
system.
Instructions:
1. Create a table in a word processor with two columns: Type of
Malware and Description/Preventive Measures.
2. Identify and list at least 5 types of malware (e.g., Virus, Worm, Trojan Horse, Spyware,
Ransomware).
3. In the Description/Preventive Measures column, write a brief explanation of each malware type
and suggest one preventive measure for each (e.g., installing antivirus software, avoiding
suspicious links).
4. Ensure that each malware type is clearly defined, and preventive measures are practical and
relevant.
5. Save your document as "Security_YourName.docx" and submit it.
Sample Output:
Type of
Description/Preventive Measures
Malware
A program that attaches itself to a host file and spreads when executed. Preventive
Virus
Measure: Install reliable antivirus software and regularly update it.
A self-replicating malware that spreads without human intervention. Preventive
Worm
Measure: Enable firewalls and apply software updates to patch vulnerabilities.
Rubric (25 points):

2 Correct file name format and submission according to instructions.
Submission
This activity encourages students to understand various malware threats and apply practical
cybersecurity measures.
Problem 3: Understanding Internet Protocols and Their Roles
Objective:
To explain the purpose of common internet protocols and demonstrate understanding of their
functions.
Instructions:
1. Create a document listing four internet protocols (e.g., HTTP, FTP, TCP/IP, DNS).
2. For each protocol, briefly describe:
o Its full name.
o Its purpose and how it works.
o A real-world example of its application (e.g., websites for HTTP, file transfer for FTP).
3. Provide a visual flow diagram for one of the protocols (e.g., how HTTP requests and responses
work between a client and a web server).

4. Ensure clarity in your explanations and proper use of technical terms.
5. Save your document as "Protocols_YourName.docx" and submit it.
Sample Output:

applications.
Problem 4: Analyzing Data Using MS Excel
Objective:
To use basic MS Excel functions to organize, analyze, and present data.
Instructions:
1. Open MS Excel and create a new spreadsheet.
2. Enter the following sales data for a small business in Sheet 1:
Month Product A Sales Product B Sales
January 120 150
February 100 130
March 130 140
April 90 110
May 160 180
June 150 170
3. In Sheet 2, calculate the following:
o The total sales for each product.
o The average monthly sales for each product.
o The maximum and minimum sales for each product.
4. Create a bar chart in Sheet 3 comparing the monthly sales of Product A and Product B.
5. Save the workbook as "SalesAnalysis_YourName.xlsx" and submit it.
Sample Output:
Sheet 1: A table with the sales data for Product A and Product B.
