Statistical Terms

Statistics is a scientific body of


knowledge that deals with
collection, organization, analysis ,
interpretation, and presentation of
data.
Descriptive Statistics is a statistical
procedure concerned with
describing the characteristics and
properties of a set of data.
Inferential Statistics is a statistical
procedure used to draw inferences
for the population on the basis of
the information obtained from the
sample.
Descriptive or Inferential?
1. A businessman wants to know his profit for the
last 8 months.
2. The registrar wants to know the possible number
of enrollees next year.
3. A t-shirt company manager wants to know the
possible sizes they are going to distribute to a
certain city.
4. A student wants to know the type of pastry she
is going to sell in school.
5. The Department of Health wants to know if
stress is related to obesity.
Qualitative Data are attributes
which cannot be subjected to
meaningful arithmetic such as
adjectives or nouns.
Quantitative Data are numerical in
nature which can be subjected to
meaningful arithmetic.

Maybe Discrete or Continuous


Discrete Variables assume exact
values only and can be obtained by
counting.
Continuous Variables assume
infinite values within a specified
interval and can be obtained by
measurement.
Qualitative or Quantitative?
1. Income
2. Years of experience
3. College course taken
4. Political party affiliation
5. Number of siblings
6. Gender
7. Favorite Food
8. Language spoken
9. Grade level
10. Religious affiliation
A Population is a collection of units
being studied.
A Sample is a small portion of a
population which it will represent
in a research study.
