Week 1 Educational Notes: Foundations of
Soccer
1. Introduction to Soccer
● Definition: Soccer (also called football globally) is a team sport played between two
teams of 11 players, aiming to score goals by getting the ball into the opponent’s net.
● Global Importance: It is the most popular sport worldwide, played in nearly every
country.
● Basic Objective: Outscore the opponent within the regulation time (two halves of 45
minutes each at the professional level).
2. The Soccer Field
● Dimensions: Rectangular, typically 100–130 yards long and 50–100 yards wide.
● Key Markings:
○ Center circle (kickoff starts here)
○ Penalty area (goalkeeper privileges, penalty kicks)
○ Goal area (smaller box near goal)
○ Sidelines and goal lines (ball out of play when fully crosses)
3. Rules of Play
● Kickoff: Begins the game and restarts after goals.
● Ball in/out of play: Ball must fully cross the line to be out.
● Scoring: The entire ball must cross the goal line between posts and under the crossbar.
● Fouls: Includes tripping, pushing, and handball (except the goalkeeper in the penalty
area).
● Restarts:
○ Throw-in (when the ball crosses the sideline)
○ Goal kick (ball crosses the goal line, last touched by an attacker)
○ Corner kick (ball crosses the goal line, last touched by a defender)
4. Basic Skills
● Dribbling: Controlling the ball while moving, using the inside/outside of the foot.
● Passing: Moving the ball to teammates; most accurate with the inside of the foot.
● Trapping: Receiving and controlling the ball (foot, thigh, chest).
● Shooting: Striking the ball toward goal; instep drive for power, inside foot for accuracy.
5. Positions & Roles
● Goalkeeper: Protects the goal, the only player allowed to use hands in the penalty area.
● Defenders: Prevent opponents from scoring, maintain defensive shape.
● Midfielders: Link defense and attack, control possession, distribute passes.
● Forwards/Strikers: Main attackers, focus on scoring goals.
6. Safety & Fair Play
● Always wear shin guards and proper footwear.
● Respect opponents, referees, and teammates.
● Avoid dangerous tackles or reckless play.
● Communication and teamwork are essential for safe and effective play.
