a)​ Graphic novels have indefinitely changed my perspective on modern storytelling.

The
additional imagery allows for the reader to feel a deeper connection and understanding
of the characters and the world around them. I find when I read books, I spend
significant time attempting to use my imagination to create the world around the
characters- and the outcome of that is that I am left without a true sense of the story and
its meaning. In contrast, when I am reading these graphic novels I am able to focus
solely on the story which has been extremely satisfying.
b)​ I think that most people in their lifetimes have read many stories, whether it was while
they were young and in school, or as a way to relax and escape into a world that can
only be found within the page of a book. Regardless of that, I believe there is only so
much a book can say when it comes to expressing emotions. When I read a book and
come across very emotional scenes, I feel as though I am creating a scene in my head
and that furthers the emotional impact of the story. I think imagery is so powerful and it
can allow us to feel things that sometimes words cannot express, and when I have
already seen these types of emotions throughout the stories I have already experienced,
something new and different is much more powerful to me.
c)​ I think within the novel “The Best We Could Do” by Thi Bui, we can see a few various
scenes that implement an interdependent relationship between the pictures and text.
One of the first scenes shows an interdependent relationship with the pictures and
words, as Thi is giving birth her words are expressive and fearful. All while the pictures
share the intimate and vulnerable moment that is giving birth. Instead of the words and
pictures explaining each other we quickly become aware of her fear of being a mother,
and the fact that she has an unsure future ahead of her. There is an emotional
connection that lies within the pictures and words that allows for us to understand the
situation. I think within the best we could do, we mostly see these interdependent
relationships and we can see them within the whole story, even when the family fled in
the refugee boats we see darkness from the images as well as tense descriptions. I find
this very engaging as I can figure out the relationship quite easily- which allows me to
look deeper into the emotional aspects of the scenario.
