Electronics Short Notes for Exam Preparation

1. Construction and Working of JFET

JFET has three terminals: Gate, Source, and Drain.

It contains an N-type or P-type semiconductor channel.

The gate forms a PN junction with the channel.

When voltage is applied between drain and source, current flows through the channel.

Negative gate voltage narrows the channel and controls the current.

2. N-Channel Enhancement MOSFET

It has Gate, Source, Drain and Substrate terminals.

A thin SiO2 oxide layer separates the gate from the semiconductor.

No channel exists initially.

When positive voltage is applied to the gate, a conducting channel forms.

Current flows from drain to source.

3. N-Channel Depletion MOSFET

A channel already exists between source and drain.

Current flows even when gate voltage is zero.

Negative gate voltage reduces current.

Positive gate voltage increases current.

4. Photodiode
A photodiode converts light energy into electrical current.

It operates in reverse bias.

When light falls on the junction, electron-hole pairs are generated.

5. Phototransistor
A phototransistor is a transistor controlled by light.

Light falling on the base region generates base current.

This increases collector current.

6. LED (Light Emitting Diode)
LED emits light when current flows through it.

When forward biased, electrons recombine with holes releasing light.

7. Carbon Microphone
A carbon microphone converts sound signals into electrical signals.

It uses carbon granules whose resistance changes due to sound pressure.

8. LCD (Liquid Crystal Display)

LCD uses liquid crystals to control light and display images.

When voltage is applied, crystal alignment changes and controls light.
