LESSON 4:

PROCESS OF REMEDIAL TEACHING,

CURRICULUM ADAPTATION &
FORMULATION OF TEACHING PLANS

Process of Remedial Teaching

Teachers must promptly begin remedial sessions so that students are not worried
and do not fall irreversibly behind in their academics. One of the most effective
approaches to assist them in avoiding difficulties in the first place is through remedial
education.

Remedial education should be prepared according to guidelines and repeated as

needed, such as:

1. Analysis of Pupils
• Prerequisites
➢ These are the abilities that students must acquire before beginning
the lesson segment to learn what you will be teaching correctly.
• Learning Needs
➢ These are the gap between a learner's present level of knowledge
and the abilities necessary to complete a task.
• Learning Abilities
➢ The ability of a person to understand something.
• Learning Styles
➢ It demonstrates that each student learns uniquely.
• Interests
➢ Learning becomes enjoyable when it involves diverse learners or
students in their interests.

2. Preparation of Discussion
It is divided into five steps, namely:
• Setting-Teaching-Objectives
➢ to guide and assess
• Adapting the curriculum
➢ to address the students’ needs
• Organizing teaching materials
➢ to enable teachers easily express concepts and to make lessons
interesting
• Choosing appropriate strategies
➢ to constantly meet the learners' needs
• Collecting and preparing supporting materials
➢ to develop the idea that is suggested for students' consideration

3. Teaching
• Group
➢ The teacher enables higher-achieving pupils to assist remedial
students with their learning disabilities.
• Individual
➢ One-to-one training to strengthen learning and help students
overcome their academic difficulties.
• Co-teaching
➢ It is also known as collaborative teaching to support all students'
various academic and social-emotional needs.

4. Evaluation/Observation
• Formative Assessment
➢ To keep track of student development and provide continual
feedback to staff and students.

2|Page
➢ A form of learning assessment that assists students in identifying
their strengths and shortcomings and improving their self-regulatory
skills.
• Summative Assessment
➢ It is used to assess a student's learning, skill development, and
academic accomplishment at the end of a specific instructional
term, such as course, semester, program, or school year.

Curriculum Adaptation

It means making any necessary changes to the existing curriculum to meet the
learning needs of children with difficulties in acquiring lessons. It also opens the way for
them to access the mainstream curriculum ([Link], 2021).

It is also a procedure of changing the general curriculum to fulfill the various desires
of novices of all abilities (UNESCO-IBE).

Teachers of Remedial Instruction ought to:

• Adapt the curriculum to shelter the learning characteristic and abilities of the
students.
• Not be directed by textbooks that should not be taken as the school curriculum.
• Adopt recommendations on cross-curricular instruction by associating related
teaching areas flexibly to have more time for practical activities and learning.
• To make and use all instructional materials effectively. For example, teachers may
select and use the materials in textbooks to meet the teaching objectives or
compile their supplementary teaching materials.

Formulation of Teaching Plans

• Teachers consider two aspects in formulating teaching plans, namely:

i. Construct realistic teaching objectives that cater to students' learning
strengths and weaknesses.
ii. Decide whether to teach the learning items in detail or a simplified manner.
• Note the significant issues and make timely modifications to address students'
most frequent challenges.
• Keep a brief record of teaching and learning objectives, assessments, and
instructional materials for future reference.
• Provide teaching content to work out teaching plans accordingly
• Focus on the teaching process and students’ performance of post-lesson reviews.
Examples of main points for review are as follows:
i. the typical difficulties of students
ii. the effectiveness of teaching strategies and class activities
iii. issues of concern
