Chapter III
RESEARCH METODOLOGY
Research Design
The independent variable of the study is the use of AI tools, such as AI
applications for studying, writing, and learning support. The dependent variable is the
academic performance of students, which may be measured through grades or
academic records. The study will also consider the role of school administration in
guiding and regulating AI use.
Data will be collected using a survey questionnaire to determine how often students use
AI tools and how they perceive their usefulness. Academic performance data may be
obtained through students’ reported grades or school records, with proper permission.
The collected data will be analyzed using statistical methods to determine if there is a
significant relationship between AI tool usage and academic performance.
This research design is appropriate because it allows the researcher to clearly understand
the connection between AI tools and academic performance in Tabogon Roosevelt High
School in a simple and systematic way.
Environment
The study will be conducted at Tabogon Roosevelt High School, which serves as the
main setting of the research. The school provides secondary education and uses various
learning strategies and technologies to support students’ academic development. With the
increasing availability of digital tools, students are gradually being exposed to AI-based
applications for learning and schoolwork.
This research environment is appropriate because it allows the study to examine how AI
tools are used by students in a real school setting and how these tools relate to their
academic performance. The school administration and teachers play an important role in
guiding students’ use of technology, making the school an ideal environment to study
both student behavior and administrative practices related to AI tools.
Key Informants
The key informants for this study will be students and school administrators of
Tabogon Roosevelt High School.
1. Students – They are the primary users of AI tools for learning, research, and
completing assignments. Their experiences, frequency of use, and perceptions of
AI will provide important information about how these tools affect their academic
performance.
2. School Administrators / Teachers – They are responsible for setting policies,
guiding students on proper use of AI tools, and integrating technology into the
learning process. Their insights will help understand how administration supports
or regulates AI tool usage in school.
These key informants were chosen because they can provide first-hand and relevant
information about AI use in the school and its relationship to students’ academic
performance.
Research Instruments
The instruments that will be used in this study include:
1. Questionnaire for Students – This survey will gather information about
students’ use of AI tools, such as how often they use them, for what purposes
(studying, assignments, research), and their perception of its usefulness. The
questionnaire may include multiple-choice and Likert-scale questions (e.g.,
strongly agree to strongly disagree).
2. Interview or Survey for Administrators/Teachers – This will collect
information about how the school administration regulates, supports, or monitors
AI tool usage. It will also include questions about policies, guidance provided to
students, and teachers’ observations on AI’s effects on academic performance.
3. School Records / Academic Reports – With permission, students’ grades or
academic performance records will be used to measure the dependent variable of
the study. This will allow the researcher to compare AI usage with actual
academic outcomes.
These instruments are appropriate because they provide reliable and relevant data to
analyze the relationship between AI tool usage and academic performance at Tabogon
Roosevelt High School.
Data Gathering Procedure
1. Permission and Coordination – The researcher will first secure permission from the
school administration of Tabogon Roosevelt High School to conduct the study and
gather data from students and teachers.
2. Distribution of Questionnaires – Questionnaires will be given to selected students to
collect information about their use of AI tools and their perceptions of its impact on
academic performance.
3. Interviews or Surveys for Administrators/Teachers – Administrators and teachers
will be asked to answer questions regarding AI policies, guidance, and support for
students in using AI tools.
4. Collection of Academic Records – With consent, the researcher will access students’
grades or academic performance records to compare with AI usage data.
5. Data Organization and Analysis – After all data are collected, the responses will be
organized, encoded, and analyzed using statistical tools to determine the relationship
between AI tool usage and students’ academic performance.
Designing the Interview Protocol
The interview protocol is a structured plan that guides the researcher in collecting
consistent and relevant information from teachers and administrators. It ensures that all
key topics are covered and that responses can be compared and analyzed systematically.
Steps to Design the Interview Protocol
1. Define the Purpose of the Interview
o The interviews aim to gather information on how AI tools are used in
school, how students are guided to use them responsibly, and how the
administration supports AI integration in learning.
2. Identify Key Informants
o Teachers who actively supervise students’ use of AI tools.
o School administrators responsible for technology integration and policy-
making.
3. Develop Interview Questions
Questions should be clear, open-ended, and focused on the research objectives.
Examples:
o How are AI tools integrated into classroom instruction?
o What guidance do teachers give to students regarding AI use?
o Are there policies or rules about the ethical use of AI tools?
o How do you think AI tools affect students’ academic performance?
o What challenges do you observe in students’ use of AI tools?
4. Organize the Protocol
o Start with an introduction explaining the purpose of the interview and
assuring confidentiality.
o List questions in a logical order, from general to specific.
o Include space for notes or follow-up questions based on the responses.
5. Pilot Test the Protocol
o Test the interview questions with a small group of teachers or
administrators to check if they are clear and easy to answer.
o Make adjustments if needed based on feedback.
6. Conduct the Interview
o Schedule a time convenient for the participants.
o Record or take notes of the responses carefully.
o Ask follow-up questions if clarification is needed.
Data Analysis
1. Organizing the Data
Responses from student questionnaires and teacher/administrator interviews
will be grouped according to the research objectives.
Students’ academic records will also be compiled to match with their AI usage
data.
2. Quantitative Data Analysis
Data from questionnaires (e.g., frequency of AI use, perceptions, and grades) will
be coded and entered into a statistical software or spreadsheet.
Descriptive statistics, such as mean, frequency, and percentage, will be used to
summarize the data.
Correlation analysis (e.g., Pearson’s r) will be applied to determine the
relationship between AI tool usage and academic performance.
3. Qualitative Data Analysis
Responses from interviews with teachers and administrators will be analyzed
using thematic analysis.
Key ideas and patterns will be identified, such as guidance on AI use, challenges
faced, and perceived effects on student performance.
4. Interpretation of Results
The researcher will combine quantitative and qualitative findings to draw
conclusions about how AI tools affect academic performance.
Tables, charts, and graphs may be used to visually present data for clarity.
5. Ethical Considerations
Only aggregate results will be reported, ensuring confidentiality of all
participants.
Ethical Considerations
In conducting this study on AI tools and academic performance at Tabogon Roosevelt
High School, the following ethical principles will be observed:
1. Informed Consent
o All participants, including students, teachers, and administrators, will be
fully informed about the purpose of the study and their role in it.
o Consent will be obtained before participation, and they have the right to
withdraw at any time.
2. Confidentiality
o Participants’ personal information, responses, and academic records will
be kept confidential.
o Only the researcher and authorized personnel will have access to the data.
3. Anonymity
o Participants’ names will not be disclosed in the study report. Codes or
pseudonyms will be used when presenting data.
4. Voluntary Participation
o Participation in the study is completely voluntary.
o Students or staff will not face any penalty or disadvantage if they choose
not to participate.
5. Responsible Use of Data
o Data collected will be used only for research purposes.
o The researcher will ensure that findings are accurate, honest, and
unbiased.
6. Respect and Safety
o The researcher will treat all participants with respect, ensuring their
physical and psychological well-being throughout the study.
