Problem Set 1.1
A. In the following items, determine if each sentence is a proposition or not. Explain
your answer.

1. The batter hit the baseball 502 feet into the center field bleachers.
- The statement is a proposition because the sentence can have a
truth value of either true or false.

2. The teacher exclaimed, "Don't come into class late again!"

- The statement is not a proposition because the sentence is an
exclamation, which is not considered to be a proposition.

3. Blue is my favorite color.

- The statement is not a proposition because there’s no way to verify
if the sentence is true or false.

4. Wow! Did you see that baseball sail out of the park?
- The statement is not a proposition because it is a question, which is
not considered to be a proposition.
5. Some exponential functions are increasing.
- The statement is a proposition because the sentence has a truth
value of true.

6. Trisect the angle

- The statement is a proposition because the sentence has a truth
value of true where an angle can be trisected.

7. 3 + 8 = 18
- The statement is a proposition because the sentence has a truth
value of false where the correct answer should be 11 instead of 18.

8. 3 + x = 18
- The statement is not a proposition because we don’t know the
value of x, therefore we cannot verify if it’s true or false.

9. A triangle is a three-sided polygon.

- The statement is a proposition because the sentence has a truth
value of truth.

10. This proposition is true.

- The statement is not a proposition because the sentence can neither
