Think About This:
Do you have think Statistics is important to you as a future teacher? Why or why not?
Statistics is very helpful in determining behavioural patterns, measuring their
intelligence, and knowing if what I will be teaching will help the students learn the materials
properly. As a student pursuing for a degree of education that specializes in mathematics,
knowing statistics will be very important in my endeavour of teaching the students what they
need in order to be functioning members of society. Ensuring that educational standards are
maintained at a high level, checking the efficacy of a topic, tracking student growth, and
monitoring the progress or success of the students is mainly what teachers do.

Statistics is very important in today’s society because we now live in the information
world, where it would keep us informed of what is happening around the world. Statistics help in
gathering important and correct data that we need to continue living in this day and age. Whether
it would be used for school or for making decisions in general, we need statistics to help with
coming to our own conclusion. It also helps with my critical thinking skills, gathering the
necessary data for an effective research, predicting the future based on specific decisions and
events, and being able to make statistical analysis from past and current events. Especially as a
student pursuing a degree in education that specializes in mathematics, I use statistics almost
every day to make analysis and predictions for research and assignments to come to an accurate
conclusion. It also helps to train my mind in thinking in certain ways; such as how to organize
data, creating hypothesis, and observation of possible results.

Since statistics is a body of knowledge, it has some terms that have unique meanings.
Some of these terms may sound familiar to you, but its meaning may be different from the ones
you think of.
To think of your prior knowledge, try giving the meaning of these terms or try using
these terms in a sentence:
a. Observation
- is the value or measure of the data that is being collected in a study or experiment.
b. Population
- is a set or collection of all possible observation of data.
c. Sample
- is a subset or portion of the population.
d. Parameter
- is a measure that describes a population's attribute.
e. Statistic
- is the quantity that represents the property of a given sample.
Reaction:
Up until recently, I only know the very basics of statistics and probability from my senior
high school experience, such as how statistical analysis is to help make predictions of the future
by gathering the necessary data. However, now that I have entered a course that specializes in
mathematics, I understand that statistics is a very complex subject that contains information on
collecting, presenting, analysing and interpreting data. It helps in developing critical thinking
abilities, obtaining data for a successful study, forecasting the future based on specific decisions
and occurrences, and doing statistical analysis of past and present events. There are two branches
of statistics; descriptive statistics, which is used to describe the basic features of the data
gathered, and the statistical induction, which comprises the use of statistics to make inferences of
some unknown aspect of a population. Statistics and probability isn’t only used in a classroom
setting, but it can also be used in our day to day lives. Statistics and probability are mostly used
in sciences to predict any future natural disasters in the world. It’s very important especially in
today’s age because we live in a world where information is the foundation of a society. The
information that we receive from the data collected will be used to make decisions in order to
have a more favourable outcome.
