Forgetting Presentation Script

The presentation discusses the concept of forgetting, exploring its causes, effects on the brain, and the potential benefits of forgetting. It includes a tragic story of Lyn Balfour to illustrate the consequences of memory lapses, and presents findings from a class memory experiment that aligns with the Forgetting Curve. Open Day Presentation Script – “Forgetting”

1. Introduction (Your part)

You know what’s funny, guys?

I actually forgot what our topic was today ■

Oh right, of course! Our topic is Forgetting!

Today, we’re going to talk about something that happens to all of us — forgetting.

We’ll explore why we forget, how the brain actually does it,

and even why sometimes forgetting is a good thing.

2. The Story of Lyn Balfour (Feras’ part)

It’s the morning of March 30th, 2007, in Virginia, USA.

A woman named Lyn Balfour is running late for work.

She’s tired — she didn’t sleep all night because her baby, Bryce, had a cold.

She’s driving, talking on the phone, feeling stressed…

Later at work, the babysitter calls:

“Why didn’t you bring your baby today?”

Lyn runs to her car and finds baby Bryce inside.

Sadly, he didn’t survive.

3. How the Brain Works (Your part)

Our brain is like a company with three main workers:

1. Basal Ganglia – the routine worker.

2. Hippocampus – the memory manager.

3. Prefrontal Cortex – the CEO.

Usually, they work together — but under pressure things change.

4. Why People Forget (Feras’ part)

Stress, tiredness, and overload weaken the memory and planning systems.

The brain switches to autopilot mode — Basal Ganglia takes over.

5. When Stress Takes Control (Your part)

Under stress, the brain’s “smart parts” stop leading.

That’s why you sometimes drive somewhere and don’t remember the journey.
The brain goes into autopilot.

6. Forgetting Is Not Always Bad (Your part)

Forgetting is actually a sign of intelligence.

The brain removes unnecessary details to stay efficient.

It’s like cleaning your phone storage.

7. Our Class Memory Experiment (Your part)

Day 1: students saw 15 words for 40 seconds.

Day 2: recalled again after 24 hours without seeing the list.

We compared both results on two graphs.

8. Comparing Our Results to the Forgetting Curve (Feras’ part)

The Forgetting Curve shows big drops in the first 24 hours.

Our results matched in some cases and differed in others —

because memory changes with sleep and attention.

9. Why Memory Changes After 24 Hours (Your part)

Three reasons:

1. Memory Consolidation during sleep.

2. Attention and expectation.

3. Active recall strengthens connections.

10. Facts, Statistics, and Insights About Forgetting (Feras’ part)

• People forget 50% of new info within an hour.

• After 24 hours, only ~30% remains without review.

• Sleep boosts memory.

• Emotional events last longer in memory.

• The brain can store 2.5 petabytes.

• Best method: spaced repetition.

11. Winners Announcement (Your part)

Top five students who remembered the most across both days.

Congratulations to all!
