Theory Basic Musicianship: Aural Skills II (Accelerated) Homework 4


140 University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance • Winter Semester 2025

Please submit this assignment per your GSI’s instructions—either in hard copy or on Canvas.

Activity 1:
Study and rehearse Rogers & Ottman rhythm étude 10.71 (p. 168, 10th Edition). Speak the top line (using
appropriate rhythm solmization) and tap the bottom line.

Once you feel comfortable performing the rhythm étude, record a video of yourself doing so, and upload it to
the “Homework 4” location on Canvas.

Lastly, conclude your video by offering a brief self-reflection on the successes and challenges you
encountered while preparing the rhythm étude.

Activity 2:
Study and rehearse Rogers & Ottman melody 12.7 (p. 182, 10th Edition), using fixed-do solfège.

Once you feel comfortable performing the melody, record a video of yourself conducting while you sing,
and upload it to the “Homework 4” location on Canvas.

Lastly, conclude your video by offering a brief self-reflection on the successes and challenges you
encountered while preparing the melody.

Activity 3:
Study and rehearse arpeggiating the given progressions below on movable scale-degree numbers. You will
need to fill in the blanks with appropriate chords. Once you feel comfortable arpeggiating the progression,
record a video of yourself performing it, and upload it to the “Homework 4” location on Canvas. A
sample is provided.
