Discussion

In this experiment, we aimed to study the construction, working principle,

and practical applications of the Cathode Ray Oscilloscope (CRO), as well as
to perform essential measurements such as amplitude, frequency, and phase
difference of electrical signals. Throughout the process, we gained a deeper
understanding of how a CRO operates and how it can be effectively used for
analyzing time-varying signals.

First, by connecting the function generator to the Y-input of the CRO, we

observed the output waveform on the screen. We adjusted the VOLTS/DIV
and TIME/DIV controls to clearly visualize the signal. By measuring the
vertical displacement and knowing the volts/division setting, we successfully
determined the signal’s amplitude. Similarly, by measuring the horizontal
span for one complete cycle and applying the time/division factor, we
calculated the signal’s time period and frequency.

Our observations showed that the experimental frequency (400 Hz) was very
close to the expected value set on the function generator. This affirmed the
reliability of the CRO in providing accurate frequency measurements,
provided the instrument is properly calibrated and the settings are correctly
adjusted.

In the second part of the experiment, we used the CRO in XY mode to study
phase differences between two sinusoidal signals. We observed the
formation of a Lissajous figure—specifically, an ellipse—which indicated that
the signals had the same frequency but a certain phase shift. By measuring
the distances on the screen (Y₁ and Y₂) and applying the correct formula, we
calculated the phase difference to be approximately 30°. This confirmed that
the CRO can be effectively used not just for amplitude and frequency
measurements, but also for complex tasks like phase comparison.

While the results were quite accurate, we also recognized that minor
discrepancies could arise from several factors. Reading errors could happen
due to parallax when manually counting divisions. Slight distortions of the
waveform could be caused by imperfect probe compensation or noise
interference from the environment. Furthermore, the quality of the time base
sweep and triggering stability could slightly influence the waveform clarity.

Despite these potential sources of error, our careful handling of the

equipment and adherence to laboratory precautions minimized inaccuracies.
We made sure to ground the CRO properly, kept the intensity at moderate
levels to avoid screen burn, and used properly matched probes wherever
necessary.

Overall, this experiment enhanced our practical skills in using the CRO and
deepened our theoretical knowledge about signal measurement techniques.
It also highlighted the importance of careful calibration, correct reading
techniques, and critical evaluation of potential experimental errors.

In a broader perspective, understanding the CRO prepares us for advanced

tasks in electronics, communication systems, and instrumentation where
waveform analysis is crucial. From simple signal verification to complex
phase and frequency analysis, the CRO remains a cornerstone of modern
electronic diagnostics.
