Module 1.2 - Linux Installation

This document outlines the learning objectives for a Linux installation module, focusing on configuring a NAT network in VirtualBox, installing and importing Linux distributions as virtual machines, and using the ssh command for communication. It emphasizes the importance of simulating real-world scenarios and provides details on networking modes and the ssh command's functionality. The document serves as a guide for setting up virtual environments and establishing remote connections.

MODULE 1.

2
Linux Installation

Azrieli School of Continuing

Studies of the Technion
Learning Objectives

• You will be able to configure a NAT network in VirtualBox

• You will be able to install and to import Linux distributions as
Virtual Machines (VM’s)
• You will be able to establish communication between virtual
machines and between the host and the virtual machine, with
the ssh command
Simulating Real World Scenarios
• When simulating real world
scenarios (whether for attack or
defense) you need to be able to get
things up and running quickly
• We use hypervisors to create
virtual environments

The ssh command

The ssh (ssh client) is a program for logging into a remote machine and for
executing commands on a remote machine
• Recently, Linux PowerShell (version 6 or higher) includes the SSH
command
• When establishing ssh connections from host to a NAT network you need to
specify port forwarding rules

The ssh command
• The ssh command will allow you to connect to another machine across the
network, log in and then perform tasks on the remote machine.
• Type ssh <user>@<hostname|IP>

root@localhost:~# ssh bob@test

The authenticity of host ‘test ([Link])’ can’t be established.
RSA key fingerprint is c2:0d:ff:27:4c:f8:69:a9:c6:3e:13:da:2f:47:e4:c9.
Are you sure you want to continue connection (yes/no)? yes
Warning: Permanently added ‘test’ (RSA) to the list of known hosts.
bob@test’s password:
bob@test:~$

• To return back to the local machine, use the exit command

The ssh command
• RSA key fingerprint
– If you answer yes at the prompt (asking to verify the machine’s identity), the RSA key
fingerprint of the remote machine will be stored on your local system:

RSA key fingerprint is c2:0d:ff:27:4c:f8:69:a9:c6:3e:13:da:2f:47:e4:c9.

Are you sure you want to continue connection (yes/no)? yes
Warning: Permanently added ‘test’ (RSA) to the list of known hosts.

• When you attempt to ssh to the same machine in the future, the RSA key
fingerprint provided by the remote machine is compared to the copy stored
on the local machine.
• If they don't match, you will see an error message.
