MODULE: The Human Reproductive

System

I. Objectives
At the end of this module, students should be able to:

1. Identify the male and female reproductive organs.

2. Explain the functions of the reproductive system.
3. Describe the processes of fertilization and reproduction.
4. Understand the importance of reproductive health and hygiene.

II. Introduction
The reproductive system is the body system responsible for producing offspring. It allows
humans to create new life, ensuring the survival of the species.

There are two types of reproductive systems: male and female. Each system has specialized
organs that work together to produce and nurture new life.

Reproduction is also linked to hormones, which control the development of the body during
puberty and regulate reproductive processes.

III. Male Reproductive System

1. Main Organs

 Testes (Testicles)
o Produce sperm (male reproductive cells)
o Produce testosterone, the male sex hormone
o Located in the scrotum, a sac outside the body
 Epididymis
o Stores and matures sperm
o Sperm travel from testes to vas deferens
 Vas Deferens
o Transports sperm from the epididymis to the urethra
 Seminal Vesicles & Prostate Gland
o Produce seminal fluid that nourishes and helps sperm move
 Urethra
o Tube that carries semen and urine out of the body
 Penis
o Delivers sperm into the female reproductive system during sexual intercourse

2. Function

 Produce and deliver sperm

 Produce male hormones
 Facilitate fertilization

IV. Female Reproductive System

1. Main Organs

 Ovaries
o Produce eggs (ova)
o Produce female hormones: estrogen and progesterone
 Fallopian Tubes (Oviducts)
o Carry the egg from the ovary to the uterus
o Fertilization by sperm usually occurs here
 Uterus (Womb)
o A hollow, muscular organ where a fertilized egg develops into a baby
o Lining is called the endometrium
 Cervix
o The lower part of the uterus that opens into the vagina
o Allows sperm to enter and protects the uterus
 Vagina
o A muscular canal that receives the penis during intercourse
o Serves as the birth canal

2. Function

 Produce and release eggs

 Provide environment for fertilization
 Support growth and development of the fetus
 Produce female sex hormones

V. Processes of Reproduction
1. Menstrual Cycle

 A monthly cycle in females that prepares the uterus for pregnancy

 Key events:
1. Follicular phase – egg matures in the ovary
2. Ovulation – egg is released into the fallopian tube
3. Luteal phase – uterus lining thickens
4. Menstruation – if fertilization does not occur, the lining sheds

2. Fertilization

 Sperm from the male meets the egg in the fallopian tube
 Fertilization forms a zygote (first stage of a new human)
 The zygote moves to the uterus and implants in the uterine lining

3. Pregnancy

 Lasts about 9 months (40 weeks)

 The fetus develops in the uterus
 Hormones support growth, nutrient supply, and labor

4. Childbirth

 The cervix dilates and the baby is pushed through the vagina
 After delivery, the placenta is expelled (afterbirth)

VI. Importance of the Reproductive System

 Ensures continuation of the human species
 Produces sex cells and hormones
 Supports growth and development of offspring
 Contributes to physical and emotional health during puberty

VII. Maintaining Reproductive Health

1. Personal hygiene – washing genital area daily
2. Healthy lifestyle – proper nutrition and exercise
3. Regular medical check-ups
4. Avoiding harmful habits – smoking, alcohol, or risky sexual behavior
5. Awareness of puberty changes – understanding menstruation, sperm production, and
body changes
VIII. Activity
Label the parts of the male and female reproductive system.

Multiple Choice:

1. The organ where fertilization usually occurs:

a) Ovary
b) Fallopian tube
c) Uterus
d) Vagina
2. The male reproductive cells are called:
a) Eggs
b) Sperm
c) Zygote
d) Hormones
3. The monthly shedding of the uterus lining is called:
a) Fertilization
b) Menstruation
c) Ovulation
d) Puberty

IX. Assessment
Answer the following:

1. Name three main organs of the male reproductive system.

2. Name three main organs of the female reproductive system.
3. Explain the difference between ovulation and fertilization.
4. Why is reproductive health important?
5. Describe the pathway of sperm from the testes to fertilization.

X. Conclusion
The reproductive system is essential for the continuation of human life. Both males and
females have unique organs and functions that work together during reproduction. Understanding
the reproductive system and taking care of it ensures healthy growth, puberty development,
and safe reproduction.
