Momentum

Momentum is defined as mass in motion, and it is influenced by both mass and velocity. The greater the mass and speed of an object, the more momentum it has, making it harder to stop. The document also provides examples and formulas for calculating momentum and its components.

1.

define
01 momentum

OBJECTIVES 02 2. identify the factors

affecting momentum;
and

3. solve problems using

03 momentum concepts.
MOMENTUM
What do you think "momentum"
means based on your activity?
Momentum
simply means "mass
in motion"
all objects
have mass
if it's moving,
then it has
momentum
it has its mass
in motion
MOMENTUM
is affected by two factors
Which is harder to stop,
the car that moves slow
or the one that moves
fast?
slower car
faster car
Consider the two identical car. Car A
is traveling at 80km/hr while car B is
travelling at 30 km/hr.
which of the two cars would be
more difficult to stop? Which of
the two cars has more momentum?
What could be the factor that
affects the momentum of the
bicycle and the car?
How does the velocity of an object
affect its momentum?
Let's verify if mass really affects
momentum...
The momentum of an object is
increased the same direction as its
velocity.
If both eggs have the same velocity,
but one is bigger and the other is
smaller, which one has the greater
momentum?
Another example is a heavy truck and a car
that bumped against a wall. Which among the
vehicle do you think will have a greater
momentum and is difficult to stop?
What do you think is the reason why
the big truck has greater momentum?
The mass of an object
affects the amount of
momentum the object
has. The greater the
mass, the greater the
momentum of the
object.
If you are looking for
mass, the formula is
m=p/v.
If you are looking for
the velocity, the
formula is v=p/m.
1. A beach ball whose mass is 4.0 kg is
moving westward at a rate of 2.5m/s.
What is its momentum?
In calculating worder problems, for you to
be able to calculate the unknown quantity
there are steps to be followed. First, you
need to identify the given. What are the
given variables in the problem, class?
“What is the unknown, class?”
“What will be the equation to be
used if we look for momentum,
class?”
p=mv
2. The 10 kg ball is rolling in a straight
line towards you. If its momentum is 21
kg.m/s. How fast is it traveling?
“What is the unknown, class?”
“What will be the equation to be
used if we look for velocity, class?”
m= p/v
