PROBLEM SET 1

EE 109 - Feedback Control Systems

Instructions: Show complete solutions. Box final answers. Submit your best ‘future engineer’ work. No
partial points.

Problem 1 [25 pts]

Consider a circuit where an inductor 𝐿 and resistor 𝑅1 are in series with a parallel branch of capacitor 𝐶
and resistor 𝑅2 .

Given:
• 𝑅1 = 4 Ω
• 𝐿=2H
• 𝐶 = 0.25 F
• 𝑅2 = 8 Ω
• Input voltage: 𝑣𝑖𝑛 (𝑡)
• Output: capacitor voltage 𝑣𝐶 (𝑡)

Configuration:

Tasks:
1. Using KVL and element laws, derive the differential equation relating 𝑣𝑖𝑛 (𝑡) and 𝑣𝐶 (𝑡).
2. Express the result in standard second-order form in terms of 𝑣𝐶 (𝑡).

Problem 2 [10 pts]

Given:

[ Note: f(t)=0 for t<0 ]

1. Task: Determine the Laplace transform of:

Problem 3 [20 pts]

Find the inverse Laplace transform of:
5𝑠 + 7
𝐹(𝑠) =
(𝑠 + 1)(𝑠 + 3)

Tasks:
1. Perform partial fraction expansion.
2. Determine 𝑓(𝑡).
Problem 4 [25 pts]
Circuit:
• Series resistor: 𝑅 = 6 Ω
• Parallel branch: inductor 𝐿 = 1 H in parallel with capacitor 𝐶 = 0.5 F
• Input: 𝑉𝑖𝑛 (𝑠)
• Output: voltage across the parallel branch: 𝑉𝑜𝑢𝑡 (𝑠) = 𝑉𝐿𝐶 (𝑠)

Configuration:

Tasks:
1. Express the impedance of the parallel branch 𝑍𝐿𝐶 (𝑠).
2. Derive the transfer function:
𝑉𝑜𝑢𝑡 (𝑠)
𝐺(𝑠) =
𝑉𝑖𝑛 (𝑠)

3. Express 𝐺(𝑠) in standard second-order form.

4. Identify the system type (low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, or band-stop)

Problem 5 [20 pts]

Consider an inverting op-amp with ideal op-amp assumptions.

Circuit:
• Inverting op-amp (ideal assumptions)
• Input resistor: 𝑅1 = 10 kΩ in parallel with an inductor 𝐿 = 5 mH
• Feedback network: resistor 𝑅𝑓 = 20 kΩ in parallel with capacitor 𝐶 = 10 𝜇F
• Input voltage: 𝑉𝑖𝑛 (𝑠)
• Output voltage: 𝑉𝑜 (𝑠)

Configuration:

Tasks:
1. Write the impedance of the input branch in the 𝑠-domain: 𝑍𝑖𝑛 (𝑠) = 𝑅1 ∥ 𝐿.
2. Write the impedance of the feedback branch: 𝑍𝑓 (𝑠) = 𝑅2 ∥ 𝐶.
3. Derive the transfer function:
𝑉𝑜 (𝑠)
𝐺(𝑠) =
𝑉𝑖𝑛 (𝑠)

4. Determine the type of system (low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, or integrator).
