Probability

The document explains the concept of probability using a scenario with 20 balls of different colors. It defines key terms such as trial, outcome, favorable outcome, sample space, event, random experiment, and probability itself. Additionally, it discusses types of chances, including even chance, sure chance, and impossible chance, as well as the concept of equally likely outcomes.

PROPABILITY

There are 20 balls in a bag-8 red, 6 blue, 4 pink and 2 green. Neha picks out a ball
from the bag.

Trial: Any particular performance of an experiment is called trial.

Example: Picking a ball

Outcome: It is a result of a single trial of an experiment.

Example: Getting a red ball on picking

Favorable outcome: The outcome which guarantees the occurrence of a particular

event is said to be a favorable outcome.

Example: When we pick a ball from the bag there are 8 possibilities of getting red.

Sample Space: The collection of all possible outcomes of the experiment.

Example: Picking a ball of certain colour. So the sample space contains four
possibilities.

Picking up a red ball.

Picking up a blue ball.

Picking up a pink ball.

Picking up a green ball.

Event: Something which happens. It is a collection of some or all the outcomes.

Random Experiment: An experiment is said to be Random Experiment if there are

more than one outcomes for it and the result cannot be predicted.

Picking up a ball but we cannot predict the colour.

Probability: It is the measure of certainty or chance of something to happen.

Number of favourable outcomes
Probability =
Total number of outcomes
Mathematical value for Probability:

It lies between 0 and 1

If an event never occur or impossible to occur then its probability will be 0

If an event will surely occur then its probability will be 1.

Chances of an Event to happen:

Even Chance: Suppose coin is tossed. Chances of getting a head and a tail are
equal. Such an event is said to have even chance.

Sure chance: If today is Monday, then it is sure that tomorrow will be Sunday. Such
an event is said to have a sure chance.

Impossible chance: If today is Monday then it is impossible that tomorrow will be

Sunday. Such an event is said to be impossible event.
Equally likely outcome: A set of outcomes of an event is said to be equally likely, if
all the outcomes have the same chance of happening.

Example: In throwing a dice, all the six numbers are equally likely outcomes.
