1.

Introduction and Activation (5 Minutes)

A. Artistic Quote (Quote)

Write the following quote on the board and ask a student to read it aloud, paying attention
to the intonation:

"Rarely do members of the same family grow up under the same roof."
B. Quote Discussion (Discussion)

Questions for Students (Pair/Mini-group work, followed by class feedback):

1. What is the main idea or message the author is trying to convey about family?
2. Look closely at the word order. Is this the typical structure for a statement in
English? What stands out? (Point out the do before members).
3. Why do you think the author chose to start the sentence with "Rarely"? What effect
does this have?
C. Theme Reveal (Theme Prediction)

Question for Students:

Based on the way this powerful quote is structured, what advanced grammar topic do you
think we will be focusing on today?
(Expected Answer: Inversion)

2. Explanation and Initial Practice (10 Minutes)

A. Initial Board Drill (Immediate Practice)

Write the following sentence on the board in a standard word order:

I only understood the complexity of the problem after I had spent three weeks working on
it.

Task:
Rewrite this sentence, putting the emphasis on the restrictive condition at the beginning.
Use the phrase Only after to start your sentence.

(Ожидаемый ответ: Only after I had spent three weeks working on it did I
understand the complexity of the problem.)

B. Inversion Grammar Breakdown (Detailed Explanation)

Discuss the principle of Subject-Verb Inversion when Negative Adverbials are placed at
the beginning of the sentence.
Structure: Negative Adverbial + Auxiliary Verb + Subject + Main Verb

3. Practice Exercises (14 Minutes)

A. Language/Drill Exercise (7 Minutes)

B. Semi-Communicative Exercise (7 Minutes)

Task: Work in pairs. Ask your partner the following questions. Your partner must
integrate one of the required inversion structures (Only... / Not until... / Little...) naturally
into their reply.

1. Tell your partner about a time you mastered a difficult challenge (a language, a
job). Not until what point did you finally feel you had succeeded?
2. What is the only condition under which you would be willing to give up your
current career path? (Only if...)
3. Describe a situation where a consequence was far greater than you anticipated.
(Use Little did I know/realise...).

4. Fluency and Debate Activity (6 Minutes)

Format: Hot Potato Debate

Topic:

"Formal education is obsolete; real learning happens only through self-directed,

practical experience."

Instructions:

1. Divide the class into two teams (Pro/Con).

2. Each student who wishes to speak must first select a card.
3. They must then begin or embed the phrase from the card into their argument, using
correct inversion, before quickly passing the turn to the opposing team.
4. The focus is on delivering a strong argument while correctly applying the advanced
structure.

Conclusion (Quick Wrap-up):

Provide immediate, positive feedback on the students' successful and natural use of the
inversion structures during the debate, emphasising how these structures elevate the
formality and impact of their arguments.
