Introduction to Statistics with Excel, R & Python
Course Outline
Traditional statistics courses often start with complex formulas that feel disconnected from the real world. This
course flips the script. We believe in Results First, Theory Second.
In this 6-week intensive, you will learn how to perform professional-grade statistical analysis using the tools
used by industry leaders. We begin with Excel to build immediate confidence, transition into R and Python to
unlock automation and big data capabilities, and finally look ‘under the hood’ with Hand Calculations to
master the mathematical mechanics of data.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
1. Analyze: Conduct descriptive and inferential statistical tests (t-tests, ANOVA, Regression).
2. Translate: Move a dataset seamlessly between Excel spreadsheets and programming environments.
3. Visualize: Create publication-quality data visualizations using ggplot2 (R) and Seaborn (Python).
4. Automate: Write scripts to clean ‘messy’ data and replicate analyses with ease.
5. Verify: Explain the logic behind p-values and coefficients to spot errors and ensure accuracy.
The 6-Week Curriculum
Week 1: The Spreadsheet Foundation
Goal: Explore the power of the universal tool for business.
• Session 1: Descriptive Statistics in Excel – Understanding data types, Mean, Median, Standard
Deviation, and the ‘Data Analysis Toolpak.’
• Session 2: Visualizing Distributions – Creating Histograms and Boxplots; understanding the Normal
Distribution and Z-scores.
Week 2: Making Decisions with Data
Goal: Moving from ‘What happened?’ to ‘Is this result significant?’
• Session 3: Hypothesis Testing (t-tests) – Comparing two groups to determine if a difference is real or
just luck.
• Session 4: Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) – Comparing three or more groups and interpreting
complex data tables.
Week 3: Breaking the Limits (Intro to Coding)
Goal: Moving from ‘Menus’ to ‘Scripts’ for speed and reproducibility.
• Session 5: The Coding Environment – Setting up RStudio and Jupyter Notebooks / Google Colab;
importing Excel data into R and Python.
• Session 6: Data Wrangling – Using dplyr (R) and pandas (Python) to clean, filter, and prepare
‘messy’ real-world data.
Week 4: Advanced Visuals & Associations
Goal: Finding hidden relationships and creating stunning reports.
• Session 7: The Art of Data Viz – Beyond Excel charts: Mastering ggplot2 (R) and Seaborn (Python)
for professional storytelling.
• Session 8: Correlation & Categorical Links – Measuring relationships between variables and
performing Chi-Square tests for survey data.
Week 5: Predictive Modeling (Regression)
Goal: Using statistics to forecast the future.
• Session 9: Simple Linear Regression – Building a model to predict one variable based on another
(e.g., Sales vs. Ad Spend) in all three tools.
• Session 10: Multiple Regression – Handling multiple predictors and understanding R-Squared and
model ‘fit.’
Week 6: The Glass Box (Mastery & Synthesis)
Goal: Deep intuition and professional workflow.
• Session 11: Under the Hood (Hand Calculations) – Walking through the math of a t-test by hand to
finally understand ‘why’ the software gives the results it does.
• Session 12: The Architect’s Workflow – Final Capstone Project: Cleaning data in Python, analyzing
it in R, and presenting the final ‘Bottom Line’ report.
