🌱 Plant Reproduction & Responses – Fun Notes

PDF
1. Types of Reproduction
• Asexual (Vegetative Propagation): 1 parent → clones, no gametes, offspring identical.
• Sexual: 2 parents → gametes unite, offspring genetically diverse.

2. Flower Parts & Functions

Part Function

Petal Bright & scented → attracts insects

Sepal Protects flower bud

Receptacle Base holding all flower parts

Stamen (Male) Filament + anther → pollen (male gametes)

Carpel/Pistil (Female) Ovary + style + stigma → eggs/fertilization

Mono = 3, Di = 4 or 5

3. Pollination
• Self-pollination: Same flower/plant, no variation, no pollinator needed.
• Cross-pollination: Different flowers same species, genetic diversity, needs pollinators.

Ways to avoid self-pollination: Stigma higher, separate flowers, timing differences, self-sterile.

4. Fertilization
1. Pollen lands on stigma
2. Pollen tube grows
3. Male gamete travels to ovule
4. Nuclei fuse → zygote formed

5. Adaptive Features
• Insect-pollinated: Bright petals, sticky pollen, honey guides, nectar.
• Wind-pollinated: Small dull petals, feathery stigmas, light pollen, long stalks.

6. Seeds & Fruits

• After Fertilization: Ovary → Fruit, Ovules → Seeds
• Roles: Protect seeds, aid dispersal
• True fruits: Only ovary → Mango, Plum, Orange

1
• False fruits: Ovary + other parts → Strawberry, Apple

Seed Dispersal: Dandelion → feathery parachutes, Sycamore → winged fruits spin, Poppy → seeds
shaken out.

✅ Quick Tip: “Petals Party, Stamens Send, Carpels Catch, Seeds Soar!”
