A. Purpose of the Assignment
This assignment is designed to help second-semester ECE / ECE (VLSI) students:
• Strengthen foundational understanding of digital logic
• Connect theory with practical digital system applications
• Develop design-oriented thinking
• Learn logic simplification and optimization techniques
• Understand PLDs and memory devices used in VLSI systems
• Improve technical documentation and circuit explanation skills
Note:
• No HDL coding is mandatory
• Circuit diagrams, truth tables, K-maps, and state diagrams are encouraged
• Focus is on design logic, correctness, and justification
B. Case Study Scenario
Title: Design and Analysis of a Digital Control Subsystem
Problem Context
Digital systems form the backbone of modern electronics, including:
• Microprocessors and microcontrollers, Communication systems, Embedded and VLSI
systems, and Industrial automation and consumer electronics
A digital control subsystem often involves:
• Data representation using binary codes, Combinational logic for decision-making,
Sequential logic for memory and control, and Programmable devices for flexibility

You are required to design and analyse a digital subsystem by applying concepts from Digital
System Design.
C. Your Task (What You Need to Do)
As an individual student, complete the following:
1. Choose One Digital System Application (Anyone):
• Digital Voting Machine, Elevator Control System, Traffic Light Controller, Digital
Alarm System, Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) block, Digital Counter System, Memory
Address Decoder, and Any similar digital subsystem
2. Logic Simplification & Binary Codes
• Identify inputs and outputs, represent logic using Boolean expressions, convert
expressions into SOP/POS, Simplify using Karnaugh Maps, Implement using NAND /
NOR-only logic, and identify suitable binary codes (BCD, Gray, etc.)
3. Combinational Logic Design
• Design at least two combinational circuits, such as:
o Adder / Subtractor, Multiplexer / Demultiplexer, and Encoder / Decoder /
Comparator
• Draw truth tables and logic diagrams
• Explain functional operation
4. Sequential Logic Design
• Select appropriate latches or flip-flops
• Provide:
o Characteristic table, and Excitation table
• Design:
o Shift register OR, and Flip-flop conversion (anyone)
5. Synchronous / Asynchronous Circuit Analysis
• Design one synchronous circuit:
o Counter or sequence detector (Moore / Mealy)
• OR analyse one asynchronous circuit:
o State table, Flow table, and Race-free state assignment
• Discuss hazards and their mitigation
6. Programmable Logic Devices & Memory
