Topic covered
1. Magnets
2. Magnetic and non- magnetic materials
3. Poles of magnet
4. Finding directions using a magnets
5. Keeping magnets safe
Magnets
 Magnets are objects that attract materials like iron, nickel,
and cobalt.
 Magnets can be natural, such as lodestones, or artificial,
made from materials like iron or other metals.
 Magnets come in different shape and size.
Magnetic material Non-magnetic material
Materials which are attracted Materials which are not
towards a magnet are called attracted towards a magnet are
magnetic materials. called magnetic materials.

Ex:- iron, nickel, cobalt Ex:- plastics, wood, glass

Poles of a magnet
Every magnet has 2 poles:
-North Pole
-South Pole
 Sprinkling iron fillings around a bar magnet, they will
gather more densely at the ends of the magnet, indicating
the location of the poles.
 Like poles are repel to each other but unlike poles are
attracted to each other.
IDENTIFYING THE POLES OF A MAGNET
 In some magnets, the north & south poles are labeled
with letters “N” & “S”.
 Sometimes, the North Pole is painted red. And South Pole
is painted blue to make it easier to identify them.
 In other magnets, a white dot is used to indicating the
North Pole.
FINDING DIRECTIONS
 Magnets have a special property that makes them
extremely useful finding Directions.
 This property has been used by sailor and travelers for
many years.
 When a magnet is freely suspended, it naturally settles in
the north-south directions.
 The end of the magnet that points towards north is called
the North Pole.
 The end of the magnet that points towards south is called
the South Pole.
