Science smurfing module 2

Video Lesson #5

Answer Key:

1. The windward receives more precipitation than the leeward.

2. The temp of the air decreases.
3. Climate is the pattern of weather that occurs in a region over a long period of time
4. There is a less amount of thermal radiation in these areas
5. Precipitation occurs
6. Increase of CO2 in the atmosphere may cause global warming
7. Greenhouse gases in the lower atmosphere absorb heat from the earth’s surface.
8. Reforestation obviously doesn’t contribute to global warming
9. Latitude, altitude and topography
10. Rising sea level

Effect of Latitude on Climate:

Activity #1 When the sun rays strike

1. The tilt of the Earth’s axis is 23.5

2. The Equator receives most of the sun’s rays
3. The tilting of the Earth’s axis and the fact that it is a sphere makes places far from the
Equator receive less heat.
4. The tilting also makes places near the equator receive more heat making air temp higher
5. The poles are far from the equator thus they are colder
6. Latitude affects climate depending on how far a place is from the equator. The farther it
is the colder the air temp gets and the closer it is the hotter the air temp gets.
Latitude – horizontal imaginary lines in degrees from 0 (Equator) to 90 (North/South Poles)

Tropical zone – Areas near the equator. Receives more sunligh

Video Lesson #6:

Activity 2:

Q1 Which place is the coldest?

Q2 Which place is the hottest?

Q3 What is the relationship of altitude and temperature?

1. Baguio
2. Tacloban
3. Higher altitude lower temp and vice versa

Effects of Altitude to Climate:

Altitude – height of an area above sea level (ASL). Average of 1 degree Celsius decreases (-) from
every 100 meters above sea level (mASL) // basically every 100 mASL makes it colder by 1
degree Celsius

Effects of nearby bodies of water to climate:

Distance – Land gains and loses thermal energy faster than water. Water gains and loses thermal
energy slower. // basically water’s reaction to the change in temp is late

(This explains why even when the sun is up at 9:00AM the water is still cold and during early
evening at 6:00AM the water is still warm)

In Summer there is a cooler sea that gives cool onshore wind so the coast has a lower temp
than inland because the coast is closer to the body of water.

In Winter there is a warmer sea that gives warm onshore wind so the Coast is warmer than the
Inland because closer.
// in summary bodies of water help counteract super cold (winter) or warm (summer) Climate
by warming/cooling places nearby because the water still thinks the temperature is warm/cold

Ex:

Glasgow (land surrounded by water) doesn’t really suffer super warm & cold temps because of
the warmth or coolness the water surrounding it still has (because water loses thermal energy
slower).

While Moscow (land surrounded by land) goes through very harsh cold & warm temperatures.

Video Lesson #7

Topography – The arrangement of the natural and artificial physical features of an area. (like
mountains)

Activity #4: Windward or Leeward?

Q1 What happens to water vapor as it rises over the mountain?

Q2 Which side experiences low(cold) temperature?

Q3 Which side experiences high(warm) temperature?

Q4 What happens when air becomes warmer and drier as it moves down the leeward side?

Q5 What dry region forms at the back of the mountain?

Q6 How does topography affect climate?

1. Water vapor condenses to form clouds (gas to liquid)

2. The windward side has low temperature
3. The leeward side has high temperature
4. Air rises up the atmosphere
5. The Rain shadow is the dry region at the back of the mountain
6. Moist wind from the sea flow up the mountain. Because it gets colder the higher the
altitude, water vapor eventually condenses (gas to liquid) and there is precipitation
(Water vapor from clouds fall as rain/snow or liquid/solid)

Sides of a Mountain:

Windward – Closer to the ocean. Receives more precipitation/clouds/rain because of the shape
of the upslope land. Generally cooler and moist climate compared to Leeward. Usually has well
moderated temps and more Vegetation.

Leeward – Drier. Receives less precipitation/clouds/rain because mountain blocking it. Generally
warmer and drier. Usually doesn’t have much Vegetation

Activity: Identify the factor affecting climate

Factor 1: (Q1)_____

As distance from the equator increases, temperature (Q2)_____. The zone with the lowest
temperatures is the (Q3)_____ zone.

Factor 2: (Q1) _____

The higher the area from the sea level the (Q2) ____ its temperature. Because of this, Mt. Fuji
has ice caps in its (Q3)____ regions

Factor 3: (Q1) _____

This explains why the (Q2)_____ side of a mountain has more vegetation. The (Q3)______ side
will have warm dry climates.

Answer Key:
Factor 1: Latitude

Q2 – Distance increases = Temperature decreases

Q3 – The polar zone has the lowest temperature

Factor 2: Altitude

Q2 – higher the area from sea level = lower temperature (colder)

Q3 – Mt Fuji has ice caps in its Higher regions

Factor 3: Topography

Q2 – Windward side has more vegetation

Q3 – Leeward has warm and dry climates

Climate Culture:

Activity: (I don’t think this is really required)

Q1 When Japan is cold, they prefer ramen. So what Filipino food best with its tropical climate?

Q2 Traditional houses in the Mt. Province allows better insulation, protecting inhabitants from
chilly air. Why bahay kubo have elevated floor?

Q3 Clothes protect us from element by providing an extra layer of insulation. What should you
pack when visiting Baguio & Tagaytay?

Video Lesoon #8
The Earth’s weather system is an affair of winds and water, in as much as it is also affected by
landforms (as suggested by topography affecting climate)

The water can turn thermal energy into mechanical energy because air tends to move
depending on it’s temperature (warmer = rise, colder = sink) and this causes the weather
systems and can also be magnified to mean something like the ocean currents.

The west coast receives colder currents of wind and the east coast receives hotter currents

Greenhouse Effect:

Solar energy is transferred into the Earth’s Atmosphere and the atmosphere filters out some UV
radiation and trap some heat that the surface reflects to space for thermoregulation of the
planet

(Thermoregulation definition: the ability of an organism to keep its body temperature within
certain boundaries, even when the surrounding temperature is very different)
Video Lesson #9

Intro to Climate Change:

Climate Change – One of the most current worldwide issues. Scientists say the earth naturally
goes through a period of cooling and warming meaning that it is not only caused by human
factors. Another POV is it is brought by human intervention. It may bring a rising sea level due to
melting of ice. It may cause severe weather disturbances like strong typhoons. Some parts of
the world may experience the “El Nino” (warmer than average) or “La Nina” (colder than
average) phenomena. May cause extinction.

Greenhouse effect is natural but human intervention makes it happen too much and that warms
the earth causing what is known as Global Warming. We didn’t initiate it but we worsened it.

4. The Bangui Wind Farm is found in the shores of Bangui Bay in Illocos Norte
5. CO2
6. Yes

8. Yes
9. Reduce Reuse Recycle
10. Agus IV Hydroelectric Power Plant in Balo-I is found in Lanao Del Norte
11. Climate is the general condition of the atmosphere within a year
12. Solar Power

Greenhouse Gasses and Greenhouse effect:

Solar Radiation warms the Earth as its energy is absorbed by the atmosphere and they include
gasses such as water vapor, CO2, methane and nitrous oxide.

Greenhouse gasses prevent the escape of thermal energy from the sun regulating the planet’s
temp. Without the layer of greenhouse gasses the thermal energy from the sun would just be
reflected to space.

Too much leads to an increase in the Earth’s temp which leads to global warming

Because of this, areas that are found in temperate region may have shorter winters. Countries in
tropical regions may have longer and drier summers. Glaciers will melt causing a rise in sea level
