believe that this method is a stepping stone for educational improvement,
whilst others insist that it acts as a hindrance to the educational system's
development. In this essay, I am going to discuss its merits and its demerits.
On the one hand, people should recognize that a standardized exam has
many favorable pros. A compelling benefit to consider is that it is integral to
advance the quality of the educational process. This means that it sharpens
consistent and reliable measures of student achievement, enabling valid
comparisons between schools and districts. Thanks to these comparisons,
results and predictions could shed light on effective teaching practices and
highlight areas for improvement, which grants authorities the chance to inform
correctly curriculum policy decisions. Another substantial point I would like to
make is that it is a leverage for demonstrating student progress. This is because
of the fact that grades stimulate competition among students, which enables
them to promote their curiosity and interest in learning. To illustrate, ABC
News showed that in 2000, due to the appearance of a standardized quiz, the
number of excellent students at Ho Chi Minh High School increased
dramatically and reached a peak compared to the previous years.
On the other hand, besides significant standardized assessment upsides,
it has some detrimental downsides. In fact, people have this perspective
because it fuels teaching to the test. In other words, educators narrow their
focus to ensure students perform well on exams, which may neglect other

emotional development. Furthermore, high-stakes testing jeopardizes student's

that the pressure to perform well can lead to stress and anxiety, fostering a

Ultimately, the above-mentioned facts highlight the advantages and
disadvantages of this issue. Its drawbacks should be taken into account, whilst
people should take positive impacts and minimize its cons.
