Tutorial-03, Run-off and Hydrograph
Date of Submission: - 28/02/2026

1) The drainage area of a watershed is 50 [Link]. The ø-index is 0.5 cm/hour and the base flow at the outlet is 10
m3/s. One hour unit hydrograph (unit depth = 1 cm) of the watershed is triangular in shape with a time base of
15 hours. The peak occurs at 5 hours from the beginning of rainfall. Calculate the (a) what would be the peak
(in m3/s) of the unit hydrograph, and (b) what would be the peak (m3/s) of hydrograph of total rainfall 5.5 cm
duration 01 hour.

2) Using the given 6-h unit hydrograph derive the flood hydrograph due to the storm given below (Table-1).
Table-1
UH:

6h-UH Ordinates (m3/s) 0 20 60 150 120 90 66 50 32 20 10 0

Storm:
Time From beginning of the storm (h) 0 6 12 18
Accumulated rainfall (cm) 0 4 5 10
The ϕ index for the storm can be assumed to be 0.167 cm/h. Assume the base flow to be 20 m³/s constant
throughout.

3) The following Table-2 shows the observed annual rainfall and corresponding annual runoff at the Dharoi dam
having catchment area of 5,286 [Link]. Analyse the data to (a) estimate the 50% and 75% dependable annual
yield of the catchment, (b) develop a linear correlation equation to between annual rainfall versus annual runoff,
and (c) what annual runoff can be expected from this catchment for an annual rainfall of 80 cm.

4) The 6-hour unit hydrograph of a basin is triangular in shape with a peak of 100 m³/s occurring at 24-h from the
start. The base is 72-h.
a) What is the area of the catchment represented by this unit hydrograph?
b) Calculate the flood hydrograph due to a storm of rainfall excess of 2.0 cm during the first 6 hours and
4.0 cm during the second 6 hours interval. The base flow can be assumed to be 25 m³/s constant
throughout.
5) An isolated 3-h rainfall event on a small catchment produces a hydrograph peak and point of inflection on the
falling limb of the hydrograph at 7 hours and 8.5 hours respectively, after the start of rainfall. Centroid of
hydrograph is at 7.2 h from the beginning of rainfall. Assuming, no losses and no base flow contribution, what
would be the basin lag (in hours) for this catchment?

6) Table-3 shows observed flows from a storm of 6-h duration on a stream with a catchment area of 500 km²

Assuming the base flow to be zero, derive the ordinates of the 6-h unit hydrograph.

7) The 3-h unit hydrograph for a basin has the following ordinates (Table-4). Using the S-curve method,
determine the 9-h unit hydrograph ordinates of the basin.

hydrograph of the basin.
