Topic: The Impact of Digital Marketing on Small Business Sales Growth

Research Topic and Hypothesis

With the rapid growth of internet usage and social media platforms, digital marketing has

become an important tool for businesses, especially small enterprises seeking affordable ways to

reach customers. Many small businesses now rely on online advertising, social media

engagement, and email campaigns to promote their products and services. However, it is still

necessary to examine whether these strategies directly contribute to improved business

performance.

The chosen research topic is the impact of digital marketing on small business sales growth.

Based on this topic, the research hypothesis is:

H₁: Small businesses that actively use digital marketing strategies experience significantly

higher sales growth than small businesses that rely mainly on traditional marketing

methods.

This hypothesis is clear and testable because sales growth can be measured through revenue

records, while digital marketing usage can be evaluated by analyzing online activity such as

social media presence, website traffic, and advertising frequency. The hypothesis predicts a
direct relationship between digital marketing adoption and business performance, making it

suitable for quantitative research.

Credible Online Sources for Literature Review

To support this research, five credible online sources were identified for the literature review.

These sources were selected based on author expertise, peer review, reputation, and reliability of

data.

1. Google Scholar

Google Scholar provides access to peer-reviewed journal articles, academic books, and

conference papers. It is widely used by students and researchers because it indexes scholarly

publications from reputable universities and publishers. Articles found here typically include

citations and references, allowing researchers to verify sources and trace original studies. This

makes it an excellent starting point for finding empirical research on digital marketing and small

business performance.

2. Small Business Administration (SBA)

The Small Business Administration publishes research reports, statistics, and guides related to

small business operations and growth. As a government agency, its data is reliable and

professionally reviewed. SBA resources often include market trends and performance indicators

that can support studies on how marketing strategies affect small enterprises.
3. Statista

Statista offers professionally compiled statistics on digital marketing usage, consumer behavior,

and business trends. Its data is sourced from recognized research institutions and industry

reports. Statista is credible because it clearly cites its data origins and provides up-to-date

numerical evidence that can be used to support claims about online marketing effectiveness.

4. Scribbr

Scribbr is a trusted academic resource that explains how to evaluate credible sources and conduct

literature reviews. It provides guidance on distinguishing peer-reviewed studies from unreliable

content. While Scribbr is not a journal itself, it supports academic integrity by teaching students

how to locate and assess scholarly materials correctly.

5. Research Methods for the Behavioral Sciences

This textbook provides a strong foundation for developing hypotheses and conducting structured

research. It explains how to identify research variables and create testable predictions. Textbooks

like this are credible because they are written by subject experts and reviewed before publication,

making them reliable references for research methodology.

Conclusion

This assignment demonstrates how a clear and measurable hypothesis can be developed from a

practical business topic. The hypothesis proposes that digital marketing positively influences
small business sales growth, which can be tested using quantitative data. The five selected

sources are credible because they originate from academic platforms, government agencies,

professional data providers, and scholarly textbooks. Together, these resources provide a strong

foundation for conducting a meaningful literature review and supporting evidence-based

conclusion
