In the solution of this problem you should:

 Show the calculations you have used in solving the problem;


 Use correct mathematical statements;
 Explain what you are calculating at each stage;
 The quality of your reasoning and how well you link this to the context will determine the
overall grade;
 At least ‘three’ different types of numeric methods need to be used to gain an Achieved
grade
 When you ‘Investigate” you must explore at least two different possibilities

Assessment Task
Craig is a builder who buys his supplies from a shop called Happy Hardware. Sometimes he uses cash
for the items he buys. Other times he charges them to his account.

Happy Hardware is having a two day “You Choose The Discount Sale”. They send out a flyer with 8
discount vouchers on them.

Craig can buy these items 3 different ways

 He could purchase all the items in his list by charging them to his account. This means he

cannot use any of the discount vouchers. However, he will only pay of the full price.

 He could purchase all the items in his list using cash. Once again this means he cannot use
any of the discount vouchers. However, he is entitled to have the GST (of 15%) removed
from the price of all items.
 He could choose to pay for all the items using the various discount vouchers.

Find which of the 3 options is the cheapest.

Later in the month Craig was looking at his total credit card and cash spending on hardware. He
noticed that in 2010 he spent a total of $26 500 on hardware supplies.,

If the ratio of his cash to credit card spending was 2:9, what was the
value of the hardware he paid for in cash?

You have a $500 Happy Hardware gift card which you can use to purchase any item in the shop. To
get the most you can for you money it is important that you take advantage of the discount
vouchers.

Investigate the maximum discount you could get spending your gift
card during the “You Choose The Discount Sale”.
