5 *A Maiden There Lived

“Courage. Kindness. Friendship. Character. These are the qualities that define us as human beings, and propel us, on
occasion, to greatness.”

— R.J. Palacio, Wonder

The time you said your past promise

Is now a memory

And with your cold smile

You le" my side

Jeongyeon walks leisurely and enjoys the fresh breeze of air as she navigates the footpath towards the heart of their
forest. The heiress of the Western kingdom stood still and smiled to herself when she came face to face with the
humming woman before her.

A rose scent flows in the breeze

And my sorrowful sigh scatters in the air

I can’t hold on to them. I can no longer hold on

To you as you move farther away...

“Unnie...” The woman continued humming with her eyes closed – seemingly oblivious to her surroundings.

“Unnie!” Jeongyeon stomped closer and hu#ed to herself when she noticed that the woman was sneakily peeking at her
with one eye open and a barely suppressed smile.
The woman started laughing when Jeongyeon flumped beside her and lay down to nap under the shade of the beautiful
and majestic, Spirit Tree.

“What are you doing here?” Jeongyeon continued closing her eyes and moved away from the woman’s incessant poking.

“Sleeping.” responds Jeongyeon monotonously.

“Tzuyu has been looking for you.” Jeongyeon ignored the woman's statement about her younger sister just as she
ignored the trail of animal tracks that were slowly disappearing as it moved away in her line of sight. She also opted to
ignore the rustling in the nearby bushes and the strong feeling of being observed by someone – unperturbed by the
unknown creatures roaming around their forest.

Jeongyeon smiled to herself when the woman stopped bothering her only to let out a loud yelp when a thick branch
suddenly hit her head.

“Unnie!” The woman ignored Jeongyeon’s whining and just glared at the younger.

“Are you lazing o# again?” Jeongyeon glared right back and slumped back in her previous position, ignoring the woman’s
glare. It only took a raised hand holding a thick branch with a raised brow for Jeongyeon to unceremoniously sit properly
but within a safe distance from the woman’s range.

“...You’re here too.” grumbles Jeongyeon weakly.

“I’ve been up since the day began, Jeongyeon.”

Jeongyeon smiled sarcastically at the response, “And so was I, unnie.”

“Of course, you are...whose bed did you warm up again?” Jeongyeon gapes dramatically not bothering to deny the
statement and even stutters when the woman raises her brows challengingly.

“Hey!” The woman glared at her firmly – her sharp monolid eyes boring into Jeongyeon's squirming figure.

“Tsk. You should really stop fooling around, Jeongyeon-ah. Your betrothal to the south’s princess will soon be declared to
our people. The Minatozaki Clan is not one to trifle with.”

"You and I both know that the South would not care regardless... it's father whom you're worried about." answers
Jeongyeon with a knowing tone.

"Well, uncle will not be happy if he hears about your escapades..."

The woman’s lips upturned when Jeongyeon just rolled her eyes and went back to resting her back against the sturdy
tree. “Besides, Princess Sana is a beauty – the golden flower of the south, and dare I say the beauty of the Elden Empire!”

Jeongyeon just grumbled at the woman’s poor attempt to cheer and even comfort her at the situation. “Yes. And the
woman is also a thorn in my side. And dare I say, a dangerous one at that.” mocks Jeongyeon and mimics the woman's
pitch.

The woman ignored the childish faces Jeongyeon was pulling and stared knowingly at the younger.

“A dangerous foe, but a worthy comrade.”

Smiling sympathetically at Jeongyeon’s grumblings, the woman playfully nudged Jeongyeon’s shins.

“This marriage is important, Jeongyeon-ah... we need the South’s wealth, as much as the South needed our strength.
This marriage will bring great honour to our house for our people.”

The woman’s words were met with silence.

Jeongyeon knows how important her betrothal to the South’s princess is. There are talks of unrest spreading in the
empire – the he!y tari#s and disproportionate demands of the Capitol to the kingdoms are slowly being felt by the
majority.
Jeongyeon may rebel, and fight tooth and nail for freedom in her father’s grasp, against the burden of being born as a
Yoo, but she also understands what responsibility is. Jeongyeon knows that if she is to save her people from their
emperor’s questionable demands that are crippling their economy, a marriage to the powerful and a#luent Minatozaki
Clan must happen.

A!er all, the South Kingdom holds a substantial portion of the Elden Empire’s economy – being a major provider in
agriculture, along with their endless mines of gold and diamonds.

“Honour and glory, right?” The infamous motto of the House Yoo. All that pride of belonging to a powerful house trapped
its successors in the promise of those three words.

Honour and Glory.

Simple words uttered in every resolution a Yoo must take. No matter what. No matter the cost.

But for the rebel young knight princess?

No honour, or glory is greater than freedom.

Yet freedom had never been within reach of a lion’s claws.

And that is the burden every Yoo must carry.

“Insanity is what this marriage will bring, unnie.” The woman just chuckled at the younger and even reached down to
tousle Jeongyeon’s golden wild mane. “Well, insanity o!en brings greatness, Jeongyeon-ah.”

Jeongyeon watches her older cousin slowly stand up and let the gentle breeze of the wind sweep her beautifully braided
and luscious long bright hair.

A streak of fiery dark blood-red hair against the gentle and warm flow of the a!ernoon sun.

“...I wish things were di#erent, unnie.”

The unspoken words were there. This burden should not have been Jeongyeon’s to carry.

‘That damn throne should not have been mine to inherit.’ thought Jeongyeon bitterly as she continues to stare at the other
whose being enveloped by the gentle rays of the a!ernoon sun.

“Things will be better, Jeongyeon-ah. You need to have faith in that. The fates are watching over us, the wheel of fates
will be kinder to us.” mutters the older with that gentle smile of hers that turns her eyes into crescents.

Jeongyeon had never trusted the illusive wheel of fate to guide him through the unknown. Fates who had betrayed
her from the moment she was born. Thus, if there's one thing she can firmly believe in...

Jeongyeon wordlessly stretched out her hands to her cousin, who took her hands without hesitation and helped her get
to her feet.

“And I will be here to remind you that, always.”

Jeongyeon could only crack a smile at the unwavering belief the woman has for her.
It was that unwavering belief in their promise to each other.

Of that promise to stand beside each other no matter what.

Freedom may never rise above their honour and glory.

Yet, no matter what, family will rise above all.

Family above honour and glory.

Family above all

all.

“Always, Seulgi-unnie.”

A/N: Just to introduce a very important character and relationship :)

The next one will take me a while, hopefully not too long. Hearing everyone's thoughts will help pump me up though!

Nevertheless, thank you for reading and supporting my story.

In the meantime,

Let me hear thoughts about the story so far!

Chapter 8: Yay!! I'm so glad you're still here! Ooh, Ji Changwook! That's an development! The demon
warrior. How is Minjeong is going to deal with that one? I can see some more blood being spilled. Or maybe
an unlikely alliance? That could be interesting.

Chapter 5: Ooh, Seulgi is here! Loving the development :)

Chapter 4: "A!er all, it was not the dreamers that built the empire, the shadows did." Oh, the foreshadowing
of that! With the story of the first half-blood and Dahyun also working in the "shadows" per se, it really is
building up to Jimin and her story! Let's go!

Chapter 3: You're back! It was interesting to see Mina's perspective here! I see how the relationship between
her and Chaeyoung is important for more than just the political partnership. This feels necessary to develop
and I'm happy we get to see both sides. Since you mention how their relationship is important for Jimin, I'm
looking forward to seeing her development while witnessing this relationship and how she internalizes that!
It seems like this a fundamental piece for character and worldbuilding, which I'm excited to see more of!

Chapter 2: Yeah, I totally get what you mean by the compacting of the arcs, we're starting with Jeongyeon
already being dead at the start and Chaeyoung being the queen. We also see some of her relationship with
Jimin which we didn't get to see much of the first time around, since this version is placing more focus on
Jimin's story. And the ending with Dahyun being revealed as the witch in the first chapter is kind of crazy,
but now I think I understand the reasoning. Chaeyoung knows this whole story because she saw it from
Dahyun's side. "Welcome to my realm, young one." Very intriguing. I'm looking forward to seeing how it's
explored.
