KEY WORDS:- Social media, Youth, Academic, Communication, Mental health.

INTRODUCTION
Social media plays a major role in the lives of young people in the modern world. Platforms
such as Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, and YouTube allow youth to communicate with friends,
share ideas, and express their creativity. These platforms help young people stay connected
with others even when they are far away. Social media also provides many learning
opportunities, such as educational videos, online tutorials, and awareness campaigns. Through
these platforms, youth can develop new skills, gain knowledge, and participate in discussions
about important social issues like environmental protection, mental health, and social equality.
Despite its benefits, excessive use of social media can create several problems for young
people. Spending too much time on mobile phones can reduce focus on studies, disturb sleep
patterns, and limit participation in physical activities. Many students try to study while
constantly checking notifications, which reduces their ability to concentrate and remember
information. As a result, their academic performance may suffer. In addition, social media often
shows unrealistic and perfect images of life, beauty, and success. This can make young people
compare themselves with others, leading to low self-esteem, stress, and feelings of sadness or
insecurity when they do not receive enough likes or positive comments.
Social media also affects physical and emotional health. Long hours of screen time reduce
outdoor play, exercise, and social interaction, which can lead to tiredness and poor health.
Sitting for long periods can make the body feel weak and inactive. Online communication
mainly uses text, images, and emojis, which lack facial expressions and tone of voice. This can
cause misunderstandings, arguments, or hurt feelings. While social media can help shy youth
make friends and build confidence online, depending only on digital communication may make
face-to-face conversations more difficult. Another important issue is that social media reduces
the boundary between school and personal life. School-related stress, homework discussions,
or conflicts often continue late into the night through group chats and social platforms. This
can increase anxiety and reduce time for rest. Many young people also use social media as their
main source of information instead of trusted websites or books. This can lead to the spread of
incorrect or misleading information. Humans are social by nature, and communication is an
important part of our daily lives.
In the past, communicating over long distances was very difficult. People used methods like
smoke signals and carrier pigeons to send messages. With the progress of technology,
communication has become much easier today. During the 1800s, many inventors worked hard
to create better ways to communicate over long distances. This period saw major developments
like the telegraph, radio, and telephone, which changed how information was shared. Over
time, the search for new and improved ways of communication led to the creation of social
[Link] recent years, communication has grown even faster. Modern technology allows
people to communicate instantly across the world and even into space. The electronic era has
both advantages and disadvantages. It has helped young people work faster and more
efficiently, but it has also created new problems among Indian youth. Over the past decade, the
excessive use of social media has increased rapidly and has become addictive for many young
people. Today, many youths are moving away from traditional media like television and radio
and spending more time on social media. Because of this, social media has a strong influence
on young people. It affects their lifestyle, education, social life, awareness, physical activities,
and learning. This study focuses on how social media influences the lives and behavior of
youth. Social media refers to how people interact online by creating, sharing, and exchanging
information and ideas in virtual communities. It uses mobile phones and internet-based
technologies to allow people and groups to communicate easily. Through social media, users
can share content, discuss ideas, and connect with others across the [Link] growing use of
the internet has changed the way people communicate with each other. Social networking sites
have introduced a new and unique way of communication, making interaction faster, more
open, and more interactive than before.
Social media is a powerful tool that greatly influences the lives of young people. It offers many
advantages such as learning opportunities, communication, and self-expression. However, if
not used carefully, it can cause stress, distraction, health problems, and emotional difficulties.
Therefore, it is important for youth to use social media responsibly by setting time limits,
choosing reliable content, treating others with respect online, and giving more importance to
real-life relationships, physical activity, and personal well-being. Overall, social media is
neither completely good nor completely bad for youth. Its impact depends on how and how
much it is used. When used in a positive and balanced way, social media can help young people
grow, learn, and stay connected. But overuse can affect their mental health, studies, and social
life. Awareness, self-control, and proper guidance can help youth use social media in a healthy
way and lead a better and more balanced life.

REVIEW OF LITERATURE
1. Kulandairaj.A.J (2014)
The study aimed to examine the impact of social networking sites on the lifestyle of youth,
focusing on both positive and negative influences. A descriptive research design was adopted,
and data were collected through a structured questionnaire from 250 youths selected using
stratified convenience sampling in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The study analyzed how frequently
youth used social networking sites and how these platforms influenced their daily habits,
fashion choices, communication, and lifestyle patterns. Findings revealed that social
networking sites helped youth connect with friends, express creativity, enjoy entertainment,
and access job-related information. However, excessive use also led to loss of time, exposure
to inappropriate content, and changes in personal and social behavior. Overall, the study
concluded that social networking sites significantly influence the lifestyle of youth, with both
beneficial and adverse effects depending on the level of usage.
2. Olayemi O.M. (2022)
The study aimed to examine the pattern of social media usage among youth and its impact on
their academic, social, and personal life. A descriptive research design was adopted, and data
were collected using a structured questionnaire from college students selected through a
convenient sampling method. The methodology focused on understanding frequency of use,
preferred platforms, and purposes of social media engagement. The findings revealed that
social media is widely used by youth mainly for communication, entertainment, and
information sharing. While respondents acknowledged positive effects such as improved
connectivity and access to information, excessive usage negatively affected academic
performance, time management, and real-life social interactions. The study concluded that
social media has a significant influence on youth, producing both constructive and adverse
outcomes depending on usage patterns.
3. Shabir, G., Hameed, Y.M.Y., Safadar, G., & Gilani, S.M.F.S. (2014)
The study aimed to analyze the impact of social media on youth, particularly its influence on
behavior, education, communication, and lifestyle. A descriptive research design was adopted,
and data were collected from youth respondents using a structured questionnaire. The
methodology focused on understanding usage patterns, time spent on social media, and
preferred platforms. The findings revealed that social media plays a major role in enhancing
communication, information sharing, and social connectivity among youth. However,
excessive use was found to negatively affect academic performance, concentration, and real-
life social relationships. Overall, the study concluded that social media has a significant dual
impact on youth, offering benefits when used moderately but causing problems when overused.
4. Nyambuga, C., & Ogweno, J. (2014)
The study aimed to examine the influence of social media on youth leisure at Rongo
University. A descriptive research design was used, and data were collected from 144 youths
through questionnaires and interviews. Most respondents accessed social media using mobile
phones, with Facebook being the most popular platform. Youth mainly used social media for
chatting, browsing websites, and playing online games. Very little time was spent on active
leisure activities such as outdoor recreation. The study found that social media strongly
influenced how youths spent their leisure time, encouraging more passive leisure activities.
5. Shetty, A., Rosario, R., & Hyder, S. (2015)
The study aimed to examine the impact of social media on youth, particularly focusing on its
effects on education, behavior, and time usage. A descriptive survey method was adopted, and
data were collected from 100 youths in South Canara District using questionnaires, with non-
random sampling techniques. The study analyzed data using frequency and percentage
methods. Findings revealed that Facebook was the most preferred social media platform,
followed by Skype and Twitter. While many respondents felt that social media helps in
education, awareness, and connectivity, a significant number believed it wastes time and
negatively affects social and educational standards. Overall, the study concluded that social
media has both positive and negative influences on youth, depending on how it is used.
[Link], M. M., Amiri, M., & Sabbarwal, S. (2017)
The study aimed to understand the patterns, purposes, and positive and negative effects of
social media usage among Indian youth, with special focus on over-utilization and its impact
on physical and mental health. An exploratory research design was adopted, using a
questionnaire survey to collect data from 126 students aged 16–25 years selected through
purposive sampling from pre- and post-graduation colleges in Chandigarh. The findings
showed that most youth used social media mainly for site surfing, entertainment, chatting, and
social networking, spending 3–5 hours or more daily on these platforms. While social media
was viewed positively as an effective communication and learning tool, excessive use led to
addiction, reduced academic focus, and weakened real-life interactions. The study also
revealed negative health effects such as mental fatigue, anxiety, eye strain, and physical
discomfort. Overall, the research concluded that although social media has benefits, over
utilization significantly harms the lifestyle and well-being of youth.

11. Yang, C. C., Holden, S. M., & Ariati, J. (2021).
The study aims to develop an integrated framework to understand how social media use relates
to the psychological well-being of youth. Its main objective is to introduce the
Multidimensional Model of Social Media Use (MMSMU), which considers social media
activities, motives for use, and communication partners together. The methodology is
theoretical and review-based, drawing on existing empirical studies and meta-analyses rather
than primary data collection. The authors synthesize prior research to examine how different
patterns of social media use are linked to positive or negative well-being outcomes. The f
indings suggest that overall time spent on social media is a weak predictor of well-being, while
specific dimensions matter more. Interactive use with close ties and relationship-maintenance
motives are generally linked to better well-being, whereas passive browsing, escapism motives,
and comparison with weak ties are associated with poorer psychological outcomes among
youth.
12. Teruelle, R. (2012)
The study aimed to explore the potential and limitations of social media in promoting and
facilitating youth activism, with a focus on platforms like Facebook and Twitter. The
methodology adopted an exploratory research design, involving analysis of selected youth
activist groups on Facebook and Twitter, a questionnaire survey of 40 youths aged 18–29, and
semi-structured interviews with 10 active participants. The research examined perceptions of
activism, online engagement, and effectiveness of social media as an activist tool. The findings
revealed that many youths believe activism and online activism can bring social change, even
though active participation remains limited. Twitter was found to be more dynamic and active
than Facebook in terms of youth activism. Overall, the study concluded that social media offers
strong possibilities for youth activism, but its effectiveness depends on sustained engagement
and meaningful offline action.
13. Lozano-Blasco, R., Mira-Aladrén, M., & Gil-Lamata, M. (2023).
The study aims to examine how social media influencers affect children and adolescents across
Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube by analyzing the content that receives the highest
engagement. It adopts a mixed methodology, combining social network analysis, data mining,
sentiment analysis, and semantic content analysis of 300 highly liked posts from leading youth
influencers. Tools such as FanpageKarma, MeaningCloud, and NVivo were used to assess
engagement metrics, emotional polarity, and thematic patterns. The findings reveal clear
differences among platforms: Twitter is mainly used for critical discussion and social
awareness, especially on issues like climate change; Instagram focuses on fashion, beauty, and
idealized lifestyles; and YouTube emphasizes entertainment and humor. Overall, influencers
on all platforms actively seek to attract attention and build parasocial relationships with young
audiences. These results highlight the strong role of social media in shaping values, emotions,
and behaviors among youth.
14. Edogor, I. O., Jonah, A. A., & Ojo, L. I. (2014).

media in Nigeria, assess whether social media enhance youths’ interaction with national
leaders, and identify other purposes for which youths use social media. A survey research
method was adopted, using questionnaires administered to 500 postgraduate students selected
through a multi-stage sampling technique. Data were analyzed using simple percentages, mean
scores, and standard deviations. The findings revealed that social media enable youths to access
traditional mass media, especially newspapers and magazines, more online than in print.
However, social media use did not significantly reduce youths’ consumption of terrestrial radio
and television. The study also found that youths use social media for dating, discussing national
issues, and engaging in cybercrimes, but rarely to communicate with national leaders.
15. Eqra Imam, D. S. M. (2023).
The study examined the influence of social media on interpersonal relationships among youth.

through a structured questionnaire. The findings showed that social media, especially
Instagram and WhatsApp, is widely used by youth. About 60% of respondents felt it
strengthened interpersonal relationships, while around 40% believed it weakened relationship
quality. The study concluded that social media helps maintain connections but excessive use
reduces face-to-face interaction and affects social well-being.

1. Instagram and WhatsApp are the most commonly used social media platforms among
youth.
2. Most respondents spend around 3-5 hours per day on social media
3. Entertainment is the main reason for using social media, followed by communication
and educational purposes.
4. A large number of respondents use social media mainly during the evening time.
5. Social media has a mixed impact on academics it helps some in learning but reduces
concentration for others.
6. Most respondents use social media during their free time rather tan while studying.
7. Many respondents access educational content such as study videos, general knowledge
and skill development.
8. Excessive usage leads to negative effects like sleep disturbance, stress, irregular routine
and reduced physical activity.

SUGGESTIONS
1. Youth should limit the amount of time spent on social media daily.
2. Social media should be used more for educational and skill building activites.
3. Avoid using social media before bedtime to maintain healthy sleep habits.
4. Students should engage in physical activities and outdoor games.
5. Proper self-control and time management can reduce over usage.

CONCLUSION
The study concludes that social media has both positive and negative impacts on youth. On the
positive side, it helps students stay connected with friends and family, improve communication
skills, access study-related content, gain general knowledge, and develop new skills. Many
respondents reported that social media occasionally supports their academic learning and keeps
them updated with useful information. However, excessive usage creates several problems.
Spending long hours online leads to reduced physical activity, irregular sleep patterns, poor
time management, and sometimes reduced concentration in studies. Some students feel tired or
drained after prolonged use, and social interaction in real life may decrease. Although many
respondents feel neutral or inspired by others’ achievements, a small number experience
pressure or demotivation. Overall, the study proves that social media is neither completely
good nor completely bad. Its impact depends on how wisely and how much it is used. When
used in a balanced and responsible manner, social media can support learning, communication,
and personal growth. But when overused, it can negatively affect academic performance,
health, daily routine, and social behaviour. In addition, Parents and Educational Institutions
should guide students on proper social media usage. Youth should also learn to identify false
information online. Spending more time on hobbies and outdoor activities can create better
balance. With careful use, social media can support growth and positive development.
Therefore, youth must practice self-control, set time limits, avoid using social media before
sleep, and focus more on real-life relationships, physical activities, and academic goals. With
proper awareness and guidance, social media can become a useful tool for development rather
than a source of distraction.
