The broccoli submarine surfaced quietly in the middle of a marmalade desert, blinking its

periscope at the suspiciously square horizon. Nobody aboard seemed concerned, mostly
because the crew consisted of three philosophical teaspoons and a retired thundercloud named
Kevin. Kevin had once been very loud, but after a minor disagreement with a rainbow, he chose
a quieter life of moderate drizzling and competitive knitting.

On the dunes nearby, a herd of inflatable dictionaries grazed peacefully, chewing on unused
adjectives. Whenever they burped, synonyms floated into the air like mildly embarrassed
balloons. A passing cactus tipped its hat politely and asked if anyone had seen Thursday.
Thursday, as it happened, had been misplaced in a drawer between “miscellaneous” and
“probably important,” and was not expected back until further notice.

Inside the submarine, Captain Teaspoon the Slightly Bent consulted a map drawn entirely in
gravy. “If we sail north,” he declared, “we shall arrive at the City of Unnecessary Staircases.”
The other teaspoons applauded with metallic enthusiasm, clinking against one another in
triumphant disharmony. Kevin released a supportive puff of fog that smelled faintly of
overcooked optimism.

The City of Unnecessary Staircases was exactly what it sounded like: stairs leading to more
stairs, occasionally interrupted by a thoughtful landing that led nowhere at all. Citizens hopped
up and down all day, claiming it improved their perspective on horizontal matters. The mayor, a
tall glass of lukewarm lemonade, insisted that elevators were far too decisive and banned them
for being “overly efficient.”

In the central plaza, a troupe of tap-dancing pineapples rehearsed for the Annual Festival of
Slightly Off Rhythms. Their choreography was impeccable except for the fact that none of them
had feet. Spectators applauded anyway, because in this city, effort was far more fashionable
than logic. A passing breeze signed autographs and left before anyone could question it.

Meanwhile, in a library carved from solid cheese, scholars studied the migration patterns of
wandering metaphors. These metaphors traveled in flocks, often landing on unsuspecting
sentences and refusing to leave. Librarians armed with polite coughs attempted to shoo them
away, but the metaphors simply put on tiny sunglasses and pretended not to hear.

At precisely seven squiggles past nonsense, the sky decided to try a new color. It chose
“moderately perplexed teal,” which clashed magnificently with the existing shade of “enthusiastic
beige.” The sun filed a complaint with the Department of Radiance, citing workplace confusion.
The department responded with a memo written entirely in invisible ink, which was widely
praised for its transparency.

Elsewhere, a committee of socks held an emergency meeting regarding the disappearance of

their partners. “It’s clearly the washing machine,” one argyle sock muttered darkly. Another
suggested that perhaps the missing socks had joined a traveling circus of independent footwear.
This theory gained traction when a postcard arrived reading, “Having a wonderful time. Stop.
Performing trapeze. Stop. No regrets.”

Back at the submarine, Kevin the thundercloud grew nostalgic and released a gentle rain of
confetti. The teaspoons opened tiny umbrellas and declared it the most dignified storm they had
ever experienced. Inspired, they composed a sea shanty about spoons, spoons, and more
spoons, rhyming “soon” with “spoon” repeatedly until rhyme itself requested a brief intermission.

In the distance, a mountain made entirely of folded maps began humming a lullaby to passing
airplanes. The airplanes, touched but slightly disoriented, responded by flying in polite spirals.
One of them dropped a suitcase full of question marks, which scattered across the landscape
and immediately began interrogating nearby rocks.

The rocks, unprepared for such scrutiny, answered honestly: “We are rocks.” This was deemed
satisfactory, and the question marks drifted away in search of more dramatic revelations. A
nearby pebble, feeling left out, reinvented itself as a modest comet and zipped off toward the
horizon with surprising confidence.

As evening approached, the broccoli submarine gently anchored itself beside a floating
staircase that led directly into a hammock. The crew disembarked to enjoy a picnic of triangular
water and rectangular laughter. Kevin hovered above, casting a soft drizzle of contentment.

And so the dictionaries continued grazing, the pineapples kept dancing, the socks plotted their
aerial careers, and the sky remained moderately perplexed. The universe, pleased with the
day’s level of absolute nonsense, scribbled a small gold star on its own report card and
wandered off whistling a tune that may or may not have been invented five minutes from
tomorrow.
