SIMPLE SENTENCE

A simple sentence is a sentence that contains one independent clause.

It has one subject and one predicate (verb) and expresses a complete thought.

1. Subject + Verb (S + V)

This pattern has a subject and an intransitive verb (a verb that does not need an object).

Examples:

1. The baby cried.

2. Birds fly.

3. She laughed.

4. The sun shines.

5. He slept.

6. The bell rang.

7. They arrived.

2. Subject + Verb + Direct Object (S + V + DO)

Here, the verb is transitive and requires a direct object.

Examples:

1. She wrote a letter.

2. The boy kicked the ball.

3. I read the book.

4. The teacher marked the scripts.

5. They watched the movie.

6. He bought a phone.

7. We cleaned the room.

3. Subject + Verb + Indirect Object + Direct Object (S + V + IO + DO)

This pattern has two objects: indirect and direct.


Examples:

1. She gave me a gift.

2. The teacher taught us English.

3. He sent her a message.

4. My father bought me a bag.

5. The man offered them help.

6. She told him a story.

7. They served us food.

4. Subject + Verb + Subject Complement (S + V + SC)

This pattern uses linking verbs that describe or rename the subject.

Examples:

1. She is a nurse.

2. The boy became angry.

3. My father is a teacher.

4. The food tastes sweet.

5. They are students.

6. The sky looks cloudy.

7. He seems tired.
