ASSIGNMENT – 2
POWER SYSTEM PROTECTION
Group - A
1. Draw the protection scheme to detect a turn to turn fault in a winding of an alternator.
2. State and draw the protection of Bus bar.
3. Mention the differences between current transformers used for protection and
measurement.
4. Why secondary of CT should not be open circuited?
5. List the abnormal conditions in a transformer against the protection is necessary.
6. List the various schemes of protection for feeders.
7. A three phase transformer having line voltage ratio 440V/11KV connected in
Star/Delta. The protection transformer on LV side has a current ratio of 500/5. What
must be the ratio of the protection transformer on HV side?
8. What is burden of CT? How is it specified?
9. Why secondary of CT should not be open circuited?
10. What do you mean by ‘differential protection’? Why is differential protection
called ‘unit-protection’?
11. What are the disadvantages of the simple differential protection scheme?
12. Why IDMT relays are widely used for overcurrent protection.
Group – B
1. Explain in details the Merz-Price circulating current protection of an alternator.
2. Identify and explain the different protection schemes necessary for the protection of
power transformer.
3. Write short notes on (i) Transley relay
(ii) Phase comparison Career Current Protection scheme
4. A three phase 66kv/11kv transformer is connected as star/delta. The transformer is
protected by Mertz-Price circulating current system. Protecting current transformers
on the low voltage side have a ratio of 250/5. Find the ratio of the current transformer
on high voltage side.
5. Explain stepped time-distance characteristics of three distance relaying units used for
I, II and III zone of protection.
6. Explain impedance relay characteristic on the R-X diagram. Discuss the range setting
of three impedance relays placed at a particular location. Discuss why the I zone unit
is not set for the protection of 100% of the line.
