Routine activities are regular, repetitive tasks performed as part of daily operations in a
construction project. These activities have standard operating procedures (SOPs) and
established safety measures.

Examples in a Construction Company:

• Site Preparation & Earthworks:

o Excavation, trenching, and leveling ground.
o Installing site barriers and safety signage.
o Routine soil compaction and backfilling.
• Structural Work & General Construction:
o Reinforcing steel and pouring concrete for foundations.
o Bricklaying, plastering, and installing formwork.
o Routine welding, cutting, and fabrication.
• Equipment & Machinery Operations:
o Operating cranes, excavators, and bulldozers.
o Using power tools like drills, grinders, and saws.
o Routine vehicle and machinery inspections.
• Health & Safety-Related Activities:
o Wearing PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) at all times.
o Daily safety briefings and toolbox meetings.
o Regular housekeeping to prevent slips, trips, and falls.

2. Non-Routine Activities

to the lack of regular execution. These activities often require special training, permits, or
additional risk control measures.

Examples in a Construction Company:

• Structural & Installation Work:

o Lifting and installing large steel beams or heavy prefabricated structures.
o Working at extreme heights (e.g., tower crane assembly).
o Installing temporary supports or propping systems.

o Handling hazardous materials like asbestos removal.
o Hot work in restricted zones requiring fire watch personnel.

3. Emergency Activities
Definition:

Emergency activities involve unplanned, urgent responses to dangerous or life-

threatening situations that require immediate intervention. These activities often require
rapid decision-making and adherence to an emergency response plan (ERP).

Examples in a Construction Company:

• Construction Site Accidents:

o Worker falls from height (e.g., scaffolding, ladders, roofs).
o Collapse of excavated trenches or unstable structures.
o Equipment failure leading to serious injuries (e.g., crane collapse).
• Fire & Explosion Hazards:
o Fire due to electrical faults, gas leaks, or flammable materials.
o Explosion incidents from improper storage of hazardous chemicals.
o Welding sparks igniting combustible materials.
• Environmental & Security Emergencies:
o Landslides or flooding affecting the construction site.
