exams rather than continuous assessment.


What are the advantages and disadvantages of exams as a form of assessment?

It is obvious that these days, many education systems in the world use some form of
examination instead of continuous assessment to evaluate students’ abilities. This essay
will explore the advantages and disadvantages of using exams as part of the assessment
tools for schoolchildren.

The most evident benefit is that testing provides students with different important
characteristics. By facing the difficulties and pressure of examinations, students must
carefully prepare the knowledge and mental stability for themselves to deal with
challenges. As they prepare to pass the exams, students may develop self-discipline and
perseverance, which are essential for success in their future career paths. Another
reason that exams would be advantageous is that they help students consolidate
knowledge. In the process of preparing for the tests, students have to memorize large
amounts of information in a short period of time. This leads to the ability to store more
knowledge in their brains and also improve their memories.

However, there are undoubtedly some negatives that come with using tests to evaluate
a student’s potential. First of all, exams bring students a huge amount of pressure. This
is because of their significance in both for the future and the stress involved in intense
revision. Schools and parents are frequently reminding students of the consequences of
failure. Therefore, feeling under continuous pressure may not only cause a student to
perform less well in the exam but also lead to breakdowns, school drop-outs, and
discipline problems. Another drawback is the fact that exams do not provide an accurate
evaluation of students. Examinations only test the rote-learning of facts in a few topics,
not the creativity or imagination of a student. This means that students might idle for a
year and then learn a course in a few days, just as they may successfully “question
spot”.

In conclusion, while using exams to assess a student has some notable advantages, it
still has lots of negatives in many schools. (322 words)
