Hello, we are Melina & Emilie, and today we are going to introduce to you Venus

Williams and was the first African American woman to be ranked 1st in tennis.
First of all, we will introduce Venus Williams and talk about the major events of
her life.
After that, we will talk about her successes.
Finally, we will conclude with the consequences this event had on the society,
especially for African Americans.
Venus Ebony Starr Williams was born in 1980 in California. She is the second to
last daughter of a five brother and sisters, besides she is from a low-income
family. That’s why his dad, Richard Williams, decided to coach Venus and her little
sister Serena as he can to get them into a better social life. At the age of 11,
Venus outshines the contestants of her age category (under 12) in the United
States Tennis Association, any defeat and above all 63 victories. A few years
later, when she was 14, she turned professional and participated in her very first
tournament as a professional player, in it, she defeated former NCAA singles
Champion, Shaun Stafford, however she lost against Arantxa Sanchez Victario,
world no 2 tennis women at the moment. The following year, in September 1997,
she played her first final, at the 1997 Us Open, unfortunately, she lost against
Martina Hingis.
However, in 2000, she won her first major singles title at Wimbledon but also her
first women’s double with her sister Serena. Besides, at the 2000 Summer
Olympics games in Sydney she will also earn gold medals in both individual and
women’s double tournaments. This year, she will be ranked no 3 with six singles
titles. Finally, the 25th of February 2002, she assumed the world no1 position for
the first time dislodging Capriati. Venus was the first African American woman to
hold the ranking. She held it for 3 weeks. And a few times later, her own sister,
Serena Williams replaced her as the no 1. To this day, Venus owned, 39 titles in
single match but also 22 with her sister in double match. Even if she isn’t at the
same level as before, Venus is still a major figure of African Americans women in
sports.
To conclude, Venus can be considered as powerful women since she came from
disadvantaged district, but above all, is part of African American community, and
may had been victim of racism all along her life. However, after all, she managed
to get her place in professional tennis. Besides, her successes and ranking as 1st
tennis woman in the world had great consequences on the society. Firstly, she
had inspired Black youth as a powerful symbol of Black American success in
sports, which was nearly absent. Besides, she allowed a greater representation of
Black women with her sister, challenging racial barriers and stereotypes. Finally,
they enabled a larger access for Black people in sports in general but also in such
historically white and elitists sports such as tennis, for example, they paved the
way for athletes such as Naomi Osaka and Coco Gauff.
