center of pressure (center of gravity)
PCG: Pressure at the plate centroid
Hydrostatic forces on plane surface2
The hydrostatic pressure force on a plane surface is equal,
regardless of its shape, to the pressure at the centroid times the
plate area.
Moment of Inertia
is a measure of an object's resistance to
changes to its rotation
For 3D continuous solid body
Area moment of inertia
is a property of a cross section that can be used to predict
the resistance of beams to bending and deflection, around
an axis that lies in the cross-sectional plane.
Calculate the position of center of pressure
To balance the bending-moment portion of the stress, the resultant force F acts not through
the centroid

• The gate in Figure is 1.5 m wide, is hinged at point B, and 6m
rests against a smooth wall at point A. Compute (a) the
force on the gate due to seawater pressure, (b) the
3m
horizontal force P exerted by the wall at point A, and (c) the
reactions at the hinge B.

Hydrostatic force and CP?
Hydrostatic forces on curved surfaces1
The horizontal component of force on a curved surface equals the force on the plane area formed
by the projection of the curved surface onto a vertical plane normal to the component.
The vertical component of pressure force on a curved surface equals in magnitude and direction
the weight of the entire column of fluid, both liquid and atmosphere, above the curved surface.
