STATISTICS ASSIGNMENT

1.

A. Grouped data & Relative frequency distribution

First, identify range:

• Minimum = 3.8 min

• Maximum = 16.5 min

• Range ≈ 12.7

• Number of classes = 6

• Class width ≈ 12.7 ÷ 6 ≈ 2.1

CLASS INTERVAL (MIN) FREQUENCY(F) RELATIVE FREQUENCY (RF)

5.7-7.8 4 0.10
7.9- 10.0 11 0.25
10.1-12.2 14 0.325
12.3-14.4 7 0.20
14.5-16.6 3 0.075
TOTAL 40 1.00

B. The modal class is 10.1-12.2 minutes (highest frequency)

i. Category percentages are converted into angles:

• Medical Care: (5/100) × 360 = 18°

• Clothing: (15/100) × 360 = 54°
• Entertainment: (5/100) × 360 = 18°
• Housing: (40/100) × 360 = 144°
• Food: (20/100) × 360 = 72° • Transportation: (15/100) × 360 = 54° ii. Housing
(40%) represents the largest slice.

4.

i. Descriptive Statistics: Summarizes data with the use of mean, median and mode.

ii. Inferential statistics: this uses the samples of entire populations to make predictions
on the entire date. It may be when the population is too large and would take too long, for
example calling 100 students out of the 22,000 population of Knust to interview them on
topics like mental health.

i. Importance of statistics
▪ Helps in data collections.
▪ Enhances research and decision making process.
▪ Its making organization of data easier.
ii. Standard deviation & coefficient of variation.
• Standard Deviation tells you how much the values in a dataset deviate from the mean
in absolute terms. In contrast, the Coefficient of Variation measures this deviation
relative to the mean, expressing it as a percentage.

• Standard deviation is calculated using 𝑠𝑑

𝑠𝐷
• Coefficient of variation is calculated as:𝑐𝑣 = ( ) 𝑋 100
𝑋
Desirable properties;

• Standard Deviation: Sensitive to extreme values.

• Coefficient of Variation: Useful for comparing datasets.

9. Highest relative position

Compute z-scores:

a. (3.2 - 4.6)/1.5 = -0.93

b. (630 - 800)/200 = -0.85

c. (43 - 50)/5 = -1.40

Highest z-score = (b)
