Question 1
a) Given the Eulerian velocity vector. Find the total acceleration of a particle.
V = 3t ei + xz ej + ty2 ek
b) An idealized incompressible flow has the proposed three dimensional velocity
distributions. Find the appropriate form of the function f(y) that satisfies the continuity
relation.
V = 4xy2 ei + f(y) ej + zy2 ek
Question 2
Exhaust (assumed to have the properties of standard air) leaves the 4-ft-diameter chimney shown
in Fig. 1 with a speed of Because of the wind, after a few diameters downstream the exhaust
flows in a horizontal direction with the speed of the wind, Determine the horizontal component
of the force that the blowing wind puts on the exhaust gases.
Question 3
Two water jets of equal size and speed strike each other as shown in Fig. 2. Determine the speed,
V, and direction, of the resulting combined jet. Gravity is negligible.
Question 4
A vane on wheels moves with constant velocity V0, when a stream of water having a nozzle exit
velocity of V1 is turned 45 degrees by the vane as indicated by the figure below. The length of
the water stream on the vane is 2 m. The speed of the water jet leaving the nozzle is 100 m/s and
the vane is moving to the right with a constant speed of 20 m/s. The area of nozzle and stream is
0.003 m2 . Determine the magnitude and direction of the force, R, exerted between the water
stream and the vane surface. Assume the water flow is frictionless and that the change in water
elevation across the vane is negligible.
Question 5
Water flows through a nozzle of decreasing diameter. The pressure at the inlet is 2000 kPa and it
leaves to vacuum. Inlet diameter is 9 cm and outlet diameter is 3cm. Find the restraining force
needed to hold the nozzle in place. Assume steady state, incompressible flow. Make required
assumptions.
Question 6
A two-dimensional jet in the form of a liquid sheet impinges on a semi-circular object as shown
in Figure. Develop an expression for the restraining force.
