Source A
Costa Rica was once a relatively unexplored destination attracting mainly Venturer-type tourists who
preferred nature-based and adventurous activities. Over time, tourism facilities such as hotels,
guided tours and improved transport infrastructure were developed to cater to increasing tourist
arrivals.
As more Dependable-type tourists visited, mass tourism began to grow. However, the destination
gradually lost appeal to some Venturer-type tourists. Tourism authorities were advised to protect
natural environments and promote adventurous activities to attract a wider range of tourists.

Tourism globally contributed more than US$4 trillion to the global economy in 2020. However,
tourism also contributes approximately 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Economic
downturns in tourist generating regions can reduce tourist arrivals in destination regions, affecting
