DIFFERENTIATION (INTRODUCTION)
1. Definition:
Differentiation is the process of finding the rate of change of a function with respect to a variable. If
y = f(x), then the derivative is written as dy/dx or f'(x).
2. Basic Rules of Differentiation:
• Constant Rule: If y = c, then dy/dx = 0
• Power Rule: If y = x^n, then dy/dx = n x^(n-1)
• Constant Multiple Rule: If y = c f(x), then dy/dx = c f'(x)
• Sum Rule: d/dx (f(x) + g(x)) = f'(x) + g'(x)
3. Worked Examples:
• Example 1: Differentiate y = 5x^3
Solution: dy/dx = 15x^2
• Example 2: Differentiate y = 4x^2 + 3x - 7
Solution: dy/dx = 8x + 3
• Example 3: Differentiate y = 7
Solution: dy/dx = 0
4. Practice Questions:
• 1. Differentiate y = 6x^4
• 2. Differentiate y = 3x^3 + 2x^2 - 5x
• 3. Differentiate y = 9x - 4
• 4. Differentiate y = 2x^5 - 3x^2 + 6
