Definition of Group Discussion

A Group Discussion (GD) is a structured interactive process where a group of candidates discuss a given
topic within a limited time to evaluate their:

 Communication skills
 Leadership qualities
 Critical thinking
 Teamwork
 Confidence
 Listening ability

It is widely used in campus placements, corporate recruitment, management admissions, and


competitive examinations.

Types of Group Discussion

1️⃣ Topic-Based GD

Participants discuss a specific topic.

a) Factual Topics
Based on current affairs, economy, education, technology etc.
Example: Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Employment

b) Controversial Topics
Require logical reasoning and balanced viewpoints.
Example: Social Media – Boon or Bane

c) Abstract Topics
Open-ended and test creativity.
Example: “Red is the New Black” / “Freedom”

2️⃣ Case Study GD

 A real-life situation is given.


 Participants analyze the problem and suggest solutions.
 Tests analytical and problem-solving skills.

3️⃣ Group Task / Situation-Based GD

 A scenario is provided.
 Group must take a collective decision.

Do’s in Group Discussion

Before GD

 Be well-informed about current affairs.


 Practice speaking clearly and confidently.
 Dress formally and professionally.
 Organize your thoughts quickly.

During GD

 Start only if you know the topic well.


 Speak clearly, briefly, and logically.
 Maintain eye contact with all members.
 Listen actively and respect others’ opinions.
 Support your points with facts/examples.
 Encourage silent members to participate.
 Be calm and composed.
 Use polite language.

Don’ts in Group Discussion

 Do not interrupt aggressively.


 Avoid dominating the discussion.
 Do not remain completely silent.
 Avoid personal attacks.
 Do not shout or argue emotionally.
 Avoid repeating the same points.
 Do not use slang or informal language.
 Never lose patience.

Important Things to Keep in Mind During GD

 Use simple and clear language.


 Avoid fillers like “umm”, “actually”, “like”.
 Maintain good voice modulation.

 Sit upright.
 Avoid folding arms.
 Smile occasionally.
 Avoid excessive hand movements.
3️⃣ Leadership Qualities

 Initiate discussion if confident.


 Summarize at the end if possible.
 Help the group stay on track.

4️⃣ Listening Skills

 Acknowledge others' points.


 Build on others’ ideas.
 Show agreement/disagreement politely.

5️⃣ Time Management

 Speak in short, meaningful turns.


 Do not take too long in one go.

6️⃣ Content Quality

 Provide structured answers (Point → Explanation → Example).


 Stay relevant to the topic.
