PSYCHOSEXUAL THEORY

According to Freud a person goes through the sequence of these five stages and along the way
there needs to be met whether these needs are met or not determines whether a person
develop a healthy personality or not.

Freud specified focal points for the particular stage if needs/pleasures are not met along the
area, a fixation occurs. As an adult person will now manifest behaviors related to this erogenous
zone.

ORAL STAGE

Too much or little can lead to oral fixation

ANAL STAGE

due to child in this age knows how to say NO

AUTONOMY VS SHAME AND DOUBT

We experience ourselves and discover our body, is it allowed to be me? If we are allowed to
discover ourselves, then we develop self-confidence. If we are not we can develop shame and
self-doubt. Both parents now play a major role.

INITIATIVE VS GUILT

Try out new things, is it okay for me to discover something new? If encouraged, we can follow
our interests. If we are held back or told that what we do is silly we can develop guilt. Supports
is given from the entire family.
INDUSTRY VS INFERIORITY

We discover our own interest and realize we ae different from others. We want to show that we
can do things right. We ask if we can make it in this world? If we receive recognition from our
teachers or peers, we become industrious which is another one for hard working. If we got too
much negative feedback, we start to feel inferior and lose motivation. Neighbors and schools
now influence us.

IDENTITY VS ROLE CONFUSION

WE HAVE DIFFERENT SOCIAL ROLES, WE ARE FRIENDS,CHILDREN AND CITIZENS, MANY

EXPERIENCE IDENTITY CRISES, IF OUR PARENTS NOW ALLOW US TO GO OUT AND EXPLORE, WE
CAN FIND IDENTITY, IF THEY PUSH US TO CONFORM TO THEIR VIEWS, WE CAN FACE ROLE
CONFUSION AND FEEL LOST.

INTIMACY VS ISOLATION

WE SLOWLY UNDERSTAND WHO WE ARE AND WE START TO LET GOOFTHE RELATIONSHIPS WE

HAD BUILT EARLIER IN ORDER TO FIT IN. WE ASKOURSELVES IF WE CAN LOVE? IF WE CAN MAKE
LONG TERM COMMITMENT, WE ARE CONFIDENT AND HAPPY, IF WE CANNOT WE MIGHT END
UP FEELING ISOLATED AND LONELY. FRIENDS AND PARTNERS CENTER OF DEVELOPMENT

GENERATIVITY VS STAGNATION

WE BECOME COMFORTABLE, WE USE OUR LEISURE TIME CREATIVELY AND MAYBE BEGN
CONTRIBUTING TO SOCIEY. GENERATIVITY – IF WE THINK WE ARE ABLE TO LEAD THE NEXT
GENERATION INTO THIS WORLD, WE ARE HAPPY. IF WE DO NOT RESOLVE SOME CONFLCTS
EARLIER, WE BECOME PESSIMISTIC AND EXPERIENCE STAGNATION. PEOPLE AT HOME OR WORK
NOW INFLUENCES US MOST.

EGO INTEGRITY VS DESPAIR

WE GROW OLDER WE TEND TO SLOW DOWN AND BEGIN TO LOOK BACK OVER OUR LIVES. WE
ASK HOW HAVE I DONE? IF WE THINK WE DID WELL, WE DEVELOP FEELINGS OF CONTENTMENT
AND INTEGRITY. IF NOT, WE CAN EXPERIENCE DESPAIR AND BECOME GRUMPY AND BITTER.
TIME TO COMPARE US WITH MANKND.
