Introduction
Caffeine is a natural alkaloid commonly found in coffee beans. It is widely consumed as a
stimulant that increases alertness and reduces fatigue. The amount of caffeine present can
vary depending on the coffee brand and processing method. This investigatory project
studies and compares caffeine concentration using principles of solutions and basic
analytical chemistry from Class 11 NCERT.
Objectives
- To understand the chemistry of caffeine.
- To compare caffeine content in different coffee brands.
- To apply concepts of concentration and solutions.
- To develop experimental and analytical skills.
Theory (NCERT Concepts)
According to the NCERT curriculum, solutions are homogeneous mixtures of solute and
solvent. Concentration can be expressed in various ways such as mass percentage and
molarity. Caffeine dissolves in hot water forming a solution that can be analyzed.
Intermolecular forces and solubility play important roles in extraction.

About Caffeine
Caffeine (C8H10N4O2) belongs to the class of organic compounds known as alkaloids. It
stimulates the central nervous system and is one of the most widely consumed psychoactive
substances.

Chemical Principles Involved
- Solubility and intermolecular forces
- Concentration of solutions
- Extraction techniques
- Basic quantitative analysis
Materials Required
- Coffee samples (Brand A, Brand B, Brand C)
- Beakers and measuring cylinder
- Hot water
- Filter paper
- Balance
- Stirring rod
Experimental Procedure
1. Prepare coffee solutions using equal masses of each brand.
2. Filter to remove solid particles.
3. Compare concentration using mass of dissolved solids or reference data.
4. Record observations carefully.
Observation Table
Brand | Mass of Coffee (g) | Volume (mL) | Estimated Caffeine (mg)
---------------------------------------------------------------
A | | |
B | | |
C | | |
Sample Calculations
Concentration = Amount of caffeine / Volume of solution.
Show calculations here based on experimental or reference values.
Result
Different coffee brands show variation in caffeine concentration due to differences in bean
type and processing.
Discussion
The variation observed can be explained by differences in roasting and blending. Arabica
beans typically contain less caffeine than Robusta beans.
Precautions
- Use equal quantities of samples.
- Avoid contamination.
- Measure carefully.
Sources of Error
Measurement errors, incomplete extraction, and variations in sample preparation can affect
results.
Applications
Understanding caffeine levels helps consumers make informed choices and illustrates
real-life applications of solution chemistry.
Conclusion
This project demonstrates how chemical principles from Class 11 NCERT can be applied to
analyze everyday substances like coffee.
