The Clockmaker’s Secret
In the quiet town of Alderwick, time moved differently. The townsfolk believed it was because of Old
Bram, the clockmaker, whose tiny shop stood between the bakery and the cobbler’s stall. Bram had
a peculiar habit of never closing his shop, even at midnight.
No one truly knew how old Bram was. His back was bent, but his hands were steady. His eyes,
magnified behind thick lenses, sparkled with a strange youthfulness. Children would press their
faces to his window, watching gears spin and pendulums swing like silent dancers.
One stormy evening, a young girl named Eliza ran into his shop seeking shelter. Lightning cracked
across the sky, and the power throughout Alderwick failed. Yet inside Bram’s shop, every clock
ticked in perfect harmony.
Eliza noticed something unusual: in the back of the shop stood a towering clock unlike any she had
seen. It shimmered faintly, as though moonlight lived within it.
Bram noticed her curiosity. 'That clock does not tell time,' he whispered. 'It keeps it.'
He explained that the clock held stolen moments — seconds lost to regret, minutes wasted in
anger, hours forgotten in grief. When people wished for more time, they were truly asking for their
lost moments back.
Eliza listened carefully. She thought of her mother, who worked tirelessly and often said she wished
for more time. 'Can it give time back?' she asked.
Bram nodded slowly. 'But only to those who understand its value.'
That night, he opened the clock’s hidden panel. A soft golden light poured out, and Eliza felt warmth
wrap around her. The next morning, Alderwick awoke refreshed. People felt lighter, kinder, and
strangely hopeful.
Eliza returned home to find her mother smiling without worry for the first time in months. The day
seemed longer, fuller. The town clock chimed softly, as if grateful.
When Eliza returned to the shop the next week, it was gone. In its place stood an empty storefront.
Only a small brass gear lay on the ground.
From that day on, Eliza treasured every second. And though Bram was never seen again, the town
of Alderwick never again complained about having too little time.
