Activity 1b
Functions: The Basics
Introduction
Mathematics helps develop logical thinking and problem-solving skills that are useful not
only in school but also in everyday situations. One important topic in algebra is the concept of
functions, which explains how one quantity depends on another. In this activity, the problems
focus on identifying functions, analyzing relations, and understanding properties such as domain,
range, and inverse relationships. Instead of simply computing answers, the activity requires
careful reasoning and justification of every solution. This encourages students to think step by
step and explain why a statement is correct or incorrect.
By studying functions, students learn how to recognize patterns and connections between
variables. They also become familiar with rules like the vertical line test and restrictions on values
that make an expression undefined. Through the exercises, attention to detail becomes important
because a small mistake in reasoning can change the conclusion. Writing the solutions clearly
also strengthens communication skills in mathematics. Overall, the activity aims to deepen
understanding of functions while improving analytical thinking and accuracy in solving problems.
Objectives
1. To identify and verify whether a given relation represents a function using appropriate
mathematical rules.
2. To determine domain, range, and other properties of functions and apply them correctly
in solving problems.
3. To explain solutions logically and present clear step-by-step reasoning in written form.
Solutions to Critical Thinking
PART II: Lesson Task/Activity Answer the following items: A. TRUE or FALSE. Write NA if the
statement is true. If false, write NI.
NA 1. A function has an inverse if its one-to-one.
NA 2. An injective function can be a surjective function.
NI 3. An into function is a bijective function.
NA 4. The domain of 𝑓(𝑥) is the range of its inverse, and the range of 𝑓(𝑥) is the domain of its
inverse.
NI 5. A parabola is always a one-to-one function.
NA 6. The identity function 𝑋 → 𝑋 is always injective.
NI 7. If function f: R → R, then 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 is an injective function.
NA 8. The codomain is the superset of the range.

NA 9. For 𝑓(𝑥) to be an into function, for every 𝑥-element, there must be at least one
corresponding 𝑦- element.
NA 10. A circle with center (0,0) is symmetric to both 𝑥 − and 𝑦 − axes as well as the origin.
NI 11. All equations with even exponents are even functions.
NI 12. A function is surjective if the domain has either a one-to-one or one-to-many relationships
with the range.
NA 13. The function 𝑓(𝑥) = 1 𝑥 has an inverse.
NI 14. The set of ordered pairs {(1,−1), (1,1), (2,2)} represents a surjective function.
