We are now looking at simplifying algebraic equations

- we have looked at simplifying algebraic equations using one step

Today we will look at:

-Simplifying algebraic equations using two-steps
- Algebraic flowcharts
- practice problems

Summative assessment Crit A: Tuesday 17th February (see calendar)

IX. Solving algebraic equations – using two steps

So far, we have solved simple equations by using one inverse

operation in examples such as 𝑥 + 3 = 7.

We are now going to look at solving equations that

require using two inverse operations. To understand
how to do this we will first look at algebraic flowcharts.

Algebraic Flowcharts
Using algebraic flowcharts, we will look at how an expression
has been built up from 𝑥 and then use inverse operations in
the reverse order to undo it.

Example: 5𝑥 + 7

x5
build up 𝑥 5𝑥 +7 5𝑥 + 7

-7 ÷5
undo 5𝑥 + 7 5𝑥
𝑥
Another Example

Solve for 𝑥: 𝑥
−4
3

÷3 𝑥 -4 𝑥
build up 𝑥 −4
3 3

undo 𝑥 +4 x3
−4 𝑥 𝑥
3
3
Let’s try one more

Example: 3𝑥 − 1

x3
build up 𝑥 3𝑥 -1 3𝑥 − 1

undo +1 ÷3
3𝑥 − 1 3𝑥 𝑥

Solving algebraic equations – using two steps

Having looked at algebraic flowcharts you should have an

understanding of how algebraic expressions are built up and
undone .

We will use that logic of how the algebraic expression is

undone to help us solve equations that require using two
inverse operations.
Solving Algebraic Equations – using two steps

5𝑥 + 7 was built up from 𝑥 by first x 5 and then + 7.

To isolate 𝑥 from 5𝑥 + 7, we look at how to undo it, so first we do -7,

and then ÷ 5.
Solving 2 Step Equations - Example
Solve for 𝒙: 𝟓𝒙+ 7 =17
To isolate 𝑥 from 5𝑥 + 7, we look at how to undo it. First, we do -7, then ÷ 5.
Just like with one step equations you can organise your work in different ways such
as method 1 or method 2 below:

method 1 method 2
5𝑥 + 7 = 17 2𝑥 + 7 = 17
5𝑥 + 7 − 7 = 17 − 7 −7 − 7
5𝑥 = 10
5𝑥 = 10
÷5 ÷5
5𝑥 ÷ 5 = 10 ÷ 5
𝑥=2
𝑥=2
Two Step Equation – Another example
𝑥
To isolate 𝑥 from − 4 = −3, we look at how to undo it.
3
First, we do + 4 , and then x 3.

Note: With [Link] you need to use method 1 to organize your work, if you prefer to use
method 2 then use your grid paper to write your steps and then put your answer in mathspace
Solving 2 Step Equations
Organise your workings and answers
on your grid paper using method 1 or
method 2 below:

method 1 method 2
2𝑥 − 7 = 11 2𝑥 − 7 = 11
2𝑥 − 7 + 7 = 11 + 7 +7 + 7
2𝑥 = 18
2𝑥 = 18
÷2 ÷2
2𝑥 ÷ 2 = 18 ÷ 2
𝑥=9
𝑥=9

Try this – show your workings

If the perimeter of the triangle is 216cm, you can write the equation
12𝑥 = 216 to represent this information.

• Find the value of 𝑥

• Challenge : Find the length of each side of the triangle
Try this

• Solve the equation to find the value of 𝑥

12𝑥 = 216
÷ 12 ÷ 12
𝑥 = 18
• Work out the lengths of the sides of the triangle
5 x 18 = 90, 4 x 18 = 72, 3 x 18 = 54
