WRIT: HANDWRITING ASSESSMENT

Grade 1: Use shorter passage (The red fox)

Grade 2 and older: Use longer passage (The big fat brown dog)

Tools needed:

Paper, Pencil, Stop watch and WRIT assessment sheet.

Instructions:

Child can place the page as they like.

Child reads passage or therapist reads to child if they cannot

Say” write your name at the top of the page and put your pencil down”. When I say go, I want you to
copy this piece until I say stop. It is not a race. Don’t do your best writing but don’t scribble. Just
write as you usually do in class. If you make a mistake just cross it out once” show example. “Do you
understand. Go”

After 2 minutes say “stop”

Scoring:

Count the letters written in 2 minutes.

Speed – 1 point per letter

Max 2 points for lines crossing out

Max 2 points for over writing.

Total score = number of letters/ per 2 minutes
