Comprehensive Electrical Engineering Notes

Prepared for Academic and Reference Use

1. Semiconductor Diodes and Rectifiers

A semiconductor diode is a two-terminal device formed by joining P-type and N-type materials. It
allows current to flow in only one direction due to the formation of a depletion region at the junction.
When forward biased, the depletion layer reduces and current flows. In reverse bias, the depletion
layer widens and blocks current. Rectifiers convert alternating current (AC) into direct current (DC).
Half-wave rectifiers use one diode and allow only one half-cycle of AC. Full-wave rectifiers use two
diodes with a center-tapped transformer. Bridge rectifiers use four diodes and do not require a
center tap. Efficiency, ripple factor, and peak inverse voltage are key performance parameters.
2. DC Motors

A DC motor converts electrical energy into mechanical energy based on Lorentz force principle.
When a current-carrying conductor is placed in a magnetic field, it experiences a force. Fleming's
Left Hand Rule determines direction of motion. Types include shunt, series, and compound motors.
Back EMF regulates armature current automatically. Speed control methods include armature
voltage control, field control, and rheostatic control. Applications include electric traction, cranes,
elevators, and machine tools.
3. Transformers

A transformer is a static electrical device that transfers energy between circuits using mutual
induction. It operates on Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction. EMF equation: E = 4.44 f N Φ.
Losses include copper losses and core losses (hysteresis and eddy current). Transformers are
classified as step-up, step-down, and distribution types. Efficiency of power transformers is typically
above 95%. Transformers are essential in power transmission and distribution systems.
4. Control Systems

A control system manages the behavior of dynamic systems. Open-loop systems have no
feedback, while closed-loop systems use feedback to reduce error. Transfer function is defined as
ratio of Laplace transform of output to input. Time response parameters include rise time, settling
time, peak time, and steady-state error. Stability analysis is performed using Routh-Hurwitz criterion
and root locus techniques. Control systems are widely used in robotics, automation, and
aerospace.
5. AC Bridges

AC bridges are used to measure unknown inductance and capacitance precisely. Maxwell bridge
measures inductance using a standard capacitor. Hay bridge is suitable for high Q coils. Schering
bridge measures capacitance and dielectric loss. Wien bridge is used for frequency measurement
and in audio oscillators. Bridge balance condition ensures accurate measurement results.
6. Power Generation and Transmission

Electrical power is generated in thermal, hydro, nuclear, and renewable power plants. Generated
voltage is stepped up using transformers for transmission to reduce losses. Transmission lines
operate at high voltages (132kV, 220kV, 400kV and above). Distribution systems deliver power to
consumers at safe voltage levels. Load curves and load duration curves help in planning power
systems.
7. Electrical Machines

Electrical machines include generators and motors. Synchronous machines operate at constant
speed determined by supply frequency. Induction motors are widely used due to rugged
construction and low maintenance. Slip in induction motors is defined as difference between
synchronous speed and rotor speed.
8. Measurement and Instrumentation

Electrical quantities like voltage, current, power, and resistance are measured using instruments.
Analog instruments include PMMC and moving iron types. Digital instruments provide higher
accuracy. Wheatstone bridge measures resistance precisely. Energy meters measure electrical
energy consumption in kWh.
9. Protection Systems

Protection systems safeguard equipment from faults. Circuit breakers interrupt fault currents.
Relays detect abnormal conditions and trigger breakers. Common faults include short circuits and
overloads. Proper earthing ensures safety of personnel and equipment.
10. Emerging Technologies in Electrical Engineering

Modern electrical engineering includes smart grids, electric vehicles, and renewable integration.
Solar photovoltaic systems convert sunlight into electricity. Wind turbines convert wind energy into
mechanical and electrical energy. Battery storage systems improve grid stability. Automation and
IoT are transforming power system monitoring and control.
