Literary criticism of the Bible
Literary criticism treats biblical texts as lasting works of literature. It asks how the authors used narrative
technique, imagery, genre, character development, rhetoric, syntax, and intertextual references to create meaning.
Questions include how plots are built, whose voices are heard, viewpoints are shaped, and themes are unified, as
well as how conflicts, dialogue, irony, and memory are presented. It also studies structure patterns like chiasms,
parallelism, and inclusion and considers how editors or redactors influence interpretation. The goal is not to settle
debates about historical fact but to understand the text’s aesthetic and cognitive impact, how readers within and
beyond ancient communities might experience it, and how literary forms carry theological, ethical, and social
meanings.
Ideological criticism of the Bible
Ideological criticism looks at how biblical texts reflect, shape, or contest power, belief systems, and social
hierarchies. It foregrounds the ideas embedded in the text— such as divine sovereignty, kingship, gender roles,
ethnic inclusion or exclusion, and economic justice—and analyzes how these notions advance particular political
or religious agendas. Critics examine how authors conceive authority and social order, and how communities
reinterpret or resist these ideas over time. The method often traces the worldviews assumed by the text,
evaluates rhetoric used for propaganda or normative instruction, and considers how the text helps form group
identity. The central aim is to uncover how ideology influences interpretation and to understand the text’s role
in sustaining or challenging power structures.
Sociopolitical criticism of the Bible
Sociopolitical criticism investigates how biblical writings engage with social structures, institutions, and political power. It
explores governance, law, class, labor, ethnicity, and conflict, asking whether and how biblical narratives, laws, and
prophetic messages reflect, critique, or seek to reform real-world politics. This approach typically situates passages in their
historical settings—temple centers, nation-states, exile and post-exile communities—and examines how political actors
priests, king s, prophets, elders use scripture to legitimize rule, mobilize people, or critique injustices. Methodologically, it
blends historical context with literary and rhetorical analysis to show scripture’s role in public life, including leadership
ethics, justice, care for the vulnerable, and responses to oppression or empire. The aim is to understand scripture as a political
instrument and a site of ongoing social negotiation.
Historical interpretation of the Bible
Historical interpretation aims to reconstruct the historical worlds behind biblical texts and to separate original
meanings from later readings. It emphasizes dating, authorship, origin, and the cultural setting of ancient Israel
and early Christianity. Techniques include source criticism, form criticism, redaction criticism, and historical
contextualization, other ancient texts, and contemporary customs. The goal is to reconstruct events, cultural
norms, religious beliefs, and social practices that influenced the texts, while recognizing the distance between
ancient readers and modern ones. This approach often grapples with myth, prophetic, legal, genealogical, the
historic of miracles, and how sacred memory preserves or reimagines past realities. It is commonly paired with
textual criticism to establish reliable readings and to situate scripture.
Feminist interpretation of the Bible
Feminist interpretation analyzes how gender is constructed, depicted, and policed in biblical texts and how these
portrayals have affected women and gender minorities throughout history. It questions patriarchal norms, power dynamics,
and theologies that either marginalize or empower women. Methods include highlighting women’s voices, rereading
narratives from alternate vantage pointsand showing how male- dominated interpretive traditions have shaped doctrine and
practice. Feminist also considers epistemology whose knowledge is deemed authoritative and advocates for more inclusive
readings that address violence, autonomy, leadership, and justice. Some strands seek to reclaim and reinterpret scriptures to
reveal resistance, solidarity, and transformative ethical visions, while others critique traditional readings and propose new
frameworks that honor women’s experiences and broader notions of community and divinity.
